On the morning of November 19, in a quick exchange with Lao Dong reporter, Mr. Hoang Quoc Huy - Head of Mau Son Hydrometeorological Station (Lang Son) - said that the cold air continues to strengthen to the North. The temperature measured at 8am was only 3.2 degrees Celsius.
The North enters the second day under the influence of strong cold air, the temperature drops sharply. Mau Son peak (1500m high) was the place with the coldest temperature recorded at more than 3 degrees Celsius, nearly half of that of yesterday.
Many high mountain points such as Pha Dinh (Dien Bien), Sa Pa (Lao Cai), Dong Van (Tuyen Quang), Tam Dao (Phu Tho) also drop to 6-8 degrees Celsius.
According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, on the afternoon of November 18, cold air affected most of the North and some places in the North Central region, causing rain and showers.
In the evening and night of November 18, cold air continues to spread deeply to the remaining areas of the North and North Central regions, then affects the Central Central and South Central regions. On land, strong northeast winds of level 3-4, coastal areas of level 4-5, some places of level 6, gusting to level 7.
Mr. Nguyen Van Huong - Head of Weather Forecast Department, National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting - assessed this as the strongest cold spell since the beginning of winter.
"Due to the impact of cold air combined with the wind convergence area over 5,000m from the Upper Laos area, from now until the end of November 19, the Northern region will have rain and showers," said Mr. Huong.
According to him, rain and cold air caused the temperature in the North to drop sharply on November 18-19.
The lowest mountainous areas in the North will be 9-12 degrees Celsius, with some places below 8 degrees Celsius. The midlands and plains will be 12-14 degrees Celsius.
"The night of November 18 and the early morning of November 19 were the coldest times of this period. The mountainous and midland areas of the North are likely to experience severe cold," Mr. Huong emphasized.
From November 20, the wind convergence area will weaken, the North will continue to be affected by cold air but will turn to a state of deep cold at night and in the morning, with sunshine during the day.
Mr. Huong warned: "From November 20 to 23, mountainous areas need to be on guard against frost and salinity, which can harm crops and livestock."
In Hanoi, it is forecasted to have rain, showers; cold weather, some places are very cold. The lowest temperature is 12-14 degrees Celsius.
