In the face of complicated floods in the Central provinces, Lao Dong Newspaper reporters had an interview with Mr. Nguyen Van Huong - Head of Weather Forecast Department, National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting - about new comments.
Sir, how is the forecast for heavy rain in the Central region in the coming days and which are the key provinces and cities?
- From November 15 to today (November 18), the area from Ha Tinh to Khanh Hoa has experienced many heavy rains with common rainfall from 100 - 300mm.
Regarding local rain, the heaviest rainfall was at Binh Dien station (Hue city), with total rainfall of over 1,000mm.

Currently, a cold air mass is strengthening from the north, combined with a strong winter wind zone. It is forecasted that today and tonight (November 18), the area from Hue City, Da Nang City, Quang Ngai, the east of Dak Lak, Lam Dong and Khanh Hoa provinces will continue to have heavy to very heavy rain. The expected rainfall is 120-250mm, in some places over 400mm.
The south of Quang Tri province will have rain from 70-150mm, locally over 250mm.
From Ha Tinh to northern Quang Tri, rain will be from 40-100mm, locally over 150mm.
From tomorrow, November 19, the rain will narrow, mainly concentrated from the south of Hai Van Pass, which is the area from Da Nang City to the east of Quang Ngai, Dak Lak and Khanh Hoa provinces. Rain will gradually decrease with a common amount of 70 - 150 mm, but there is still a possibility of local rainfall of over 250 mm. Heavy rain is forecast to continue until around November 22.
The rain forecast is still complicated and fluctuating. So how is the flood situation on rivers in the Central region forecast, sir?
- Forecast for floods in the coming time in the Central region under the impact of rain will continue, we believe that from November 18 to November 20, floods on rivers from Quang Tri to Khanh Hoa will continue to be high with flood peaks in rivers likely at alert level 2 - alert level 3 and some places above alert level 3. The high flood peak is mainly concentrated in the areas of Hue City, Da Nang City, Quang Ngai.
Thus, after November 20, the flood situation on rivers is forecast to be less worrying, sir?
- Notably, the rain is likely to continue until around November 20, then gradually decrease and narrow down the coastal concentration. However, from November 23 to 24, the area from Da Nang to Khanh Hoa may continue to be affected by a new winter wind, continuing to cause rain and causing floods to rise again.
The main reason for the decrease in floods that may then rise again is because the rain in the Central region will move along the impact of the winter wind. This is a typical rainfall in this area. Each winter wind will produce a rainstorm, bringing a new flood cycle. When the rain temporarily decreases, the flood recedes; when the rain increases, the flood immediately rises again. People need to be extremely vigilant and proactively implement flood prevention solutions according to the recommendations of functional agencies and local authorities.
After a period of heavy rain, the soil moisture model is at a high level, what is the risk of landslides, sir?
- Regarding the risk of landslides, the Central region has experienced widespread heavy rain, especially the rains from October 25 to 30, from November 15 to 18 and are forecast to last in the coming days. The heavy rain from Ha Tinh to Lam Dong has caused the mountainous areas west of these provinces to face a very high risk of flash floods and landslides.
Even when the weather stops and the sun rises, the soil is still saturated with water, so landslides can continue to occur, people need to pay close attention.
Sincerely thank you!
