Keeping up with the garbage line
Every day, Soc Trang solid waste treatment joint venture Enterprise, under Soc Trang Urban Construction Joint Stock Company (Can Tho City), receives and processes 160 - 200 tons of domestic waste from the old Soc Trang City and neighboring areas. Most of the garbage has not been classified at source, is high in humidity, and has many organic ingredients, and is stored 1-2 days before collection, so when brought to the factory, the stench is very strong.
Amidst the strong smell of garbage, about 20 female workers are still regularly present on the side of the receiver, cleaning up each type of recyclable garbage, from plastic bags, plastic bottles to aluminum, iron, glass materials.
Ms. Lam Thi Sieu, who has been attached to the job for 9 years, said: "There is all kinds of garbage and the smell is very unpleasant. In the early days, I was not used to the smell and the line ran continuously, so I was easily dizzy, but gradually I got used to it. Doing it carefully and following the correct process will help reduce the amount of garbage that needs to be buried, keeping the environment cleaner. Although the work is hard, the unit always cares about the health of workers, receiving health check-ups twice a year, and being given gifts during Tet is also a motivation for me to stay long-term, she shared.
In the Classification Workshop, Ms. Lam Thi Nga directly collects and classifies PET plastic bottles on the hand-carried bang. Every day, she and her colleagues sort dozens of tons of garbage.
Ms. Nga said that the garbage at the factory is of all kinds, the most severe is garbage from hospitals or slaughterhouses for livestock and poultry because it still retains blood and gives off a foul smell. In addition, large plastic bags and long plastic wires during the collection process are often caught in the machine, and when sorting, they need to be pulled, sometimes needing 2-3 people to support.
Despite the heavy work, Ms. Nga and her colleagues always strictly follow the classification, labor protection, internal regulations and working hours, thanks to which 100% of the daily waste received is classified according to regulations, the rate of recyclable waste increases by about 2.5%, contributing to helping the unit successfully complete the task of waste treatment.
Quietly contributing energy, silently creating
To improve work efficiency and save costs, many women at the Enterprise have jointly implemented many effective initiatives. In the past 2 years, the Enterprise has coordinated with the collective of employees to apply nearly 37 innovation initiatives and new solutions to help operate waste classification and treatment lines, contributing to the completion and exceeding the target assigned by the Company of 28% per year.
Ms. Lam Thi Sieu said - The enterprise is invested in a waste classification, compost generation and landfill line, located at least 3,000m from the residential area according to environmental regulations. Due to its remote location, the Enterprise has installed 3 lightning protection systems at the workshops to ensure safety during the rainy and stormy season. After more than 5 years of operation, this system has deteriorated and the estimated repair cost is more than 81.5 million VND. In order to save for the unit, she and the technical team proposed self-surveying and repairing, both ensuring production safety and saving significant costs for the Company.
Ms. Lam Thi Nga is also recognized for two typical initiatives: "Improving the elevation of the side of the conveyor belt" to help the line operate stably, and " Expanding the open-air fogging" to help avoid garbage accidents and increase labor productivity.
Ms. Nguyen Thu Trang - Chairman of the Trade Union of Soc Trang Urban Construction Joint Stock Company, said - The Board of Directors and the Company's Trade Union always care about and look after the lives of workers, especially female workers. Every year, union members receive a general health check-up twice at a specialized hospital, and female workers also receive reproductive health check-ups. On the occasion of holidays, Tet, International Women's Day March 8 and Vietnamese Women's Day October 20, the Trade Union will hold meetings and give gifts.
On the occasion of October 20 this year, the departmental unions organizing activities at the unit, each female union member was presented with a gift worth 600,000 VND from the Company's Trade Union.
