On June 9, immediately after the fatal accident from the tourist paragliding activity, the Management Board of Son Tra Peninsula and Da Nang tourist beaches immediately stopped all flight activities on Son Tra Mountain. The temporary suspension order took effect from the morning of July 9, lasting until further notice from the authorities.
As Lao Dong reported, a fatal accident caused by a tourist paraglider on Son Tra mountain occurred last night - July 8.
The victim was identified as tourist Hoang Quoc T (36 years old, from Hung Yen province, currently residing in Ho Chi Minh City). Mr. T and a pilot ( controller) took off from a paragliding spot on the top of Son Tra mountain on the afternoon of July 8. Not long after that, they had an accident and fell near the foot of the mountain, close to the coast, and died. The driver was slightly injured.
According to the Management Board of Son Tra Peninsula and Da Nang tourist beaches, paragliding activities in Son Tra initially started from pilots, coaches and athletes of professional parachute clubs, then spread among young people; by June 2023, Da Nang City Tourism Department granted a pilot business license, becoming an adventure tourism product, attracting many domestic and foreign tourists to participate.
The unit licensing the operation of paragliding to travel on Son Tra Peninsula is the Department of Culture - Sports and Tourism, but the Management Board of Son Tra Peninsula and Da Nang tourist beaches is the unit that supervises the operation, checks the license, administrative procedures, conditions, flight times... This activity has been conducted since June 2023.
According to Mr. Phan Minh Hai - Deputy Management Board of Son Tra Peninsula and Da Nang tourist beaches, there are currently 5 licensed units (including: Central region Paragliding Tourism Company Limited; Da Nang Bay Company Limited; Da Nang Paragliding Joint Stock Company; Tam Phat Paragliding Company Limited; Tropical Forest Paragliding & Service Company Limited).
At the time of operation, there were about 900 visitors/month. However, currently, on average, there are over 1,500 tourists flying each month to experience the paragliding service from Son Tra peak to the beach.
The list of pilots and tourists experiencing daily paragliding is made and reported to the air traffic management unit.
