Energy saving is not just about "reduce".
In the past time, the political, economic and security situation in the world has had many complex fluctuations, military conflicts and geopolitical tensions in many regions of the world have increased, especially in some large energy production and transit areas of the world.
This directly affects the supply of oil, gas and coal in the international market, disrupting supply and causing strong fluctuations in energy prices, creating many challenges for countries dependent on energy imports, increasing risks to energy security of many countries, including Vietnam.
Therefore, using energy economically and efficiently is identified as one of the most important solutions to minimize energy supply risks, reduce production costs, improve efficiency and competitiveness of the economy, and at the same time contribute to ensuring national energy security and sustainable development.
According to Mr. Dang Hai Dung - Deputy Director of the Department of Innovation, Green Transformation and Industrial Promotion (Ministry of Industry and Trade), Vietnam is entering a new stage of development, in which the energy problem is no longer just meeting demand, but has become the foundation of macroeconomic stability, competitiveness and growth quality. Energy demand continues to increase, the transition process is faster while external factors are increasingly complex and difficult to predict.
In that context, the requirement to ensure energy security associated with sustainable development becomes more urgent than ever. This orientation has been clearly defined in Resolution No. 70-NQ/TW of the Politburo, emphasizing the use of energy economically and efficiently; developing a diverse and sustainable energy system; reducing dependence on external energy sources. At the same time, it has been concretized in Directive No. 09/CT-TTg in 2026 of the Prime Minister with very specific goals and solutions" - Mr. Dang Hai Dung emphasized.
According to Mr. Dang Hai Dung, energy saving is not just "reducing", but making it smarter, more efficient and more sustainable. "Innovation, digital transformation, technology application, using high-performance equipment, modern energy management... are key factors to improve energy efficiency in the entire economy. Each innovative solution today will contribute to forming a green lifestyle, a modern production and consumption method and a sustainable development economy in the future" - Mr. Dung shared.
Save 463,000 kWh in just 1 hour of turning off the lights
The Earth Hour campaign is a global annual event, initiated in 2007, and has attracted the participation of nearly 200 countries and territories. In Vietnam, the program is co-chaired by the Ministry of Industry and Trade and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), with the response of 63 provinces and cities and a large number of people from all walks of life. 2026 marks the 18th time Vietnam has participated in this campaign.
According to data from the National Power System and Electricity Market Operation Company (NSMO), after 1 hour of turning off the lights to respond to the Earth Hour 2026 Campaign (from 8:30 PM to 9:30 PM on March 28, 2026), the whole country saved 463,000 kWh of electricity, equivalent to about 1.02 billion VND.
This result continues to affirm the spillover effect of the Earth Hour Campaign in Vietnam, not only stopping at a symbolic event but gradually transforming awareness into specific actions in the community.Through many years of implementation, the campaign has contributed to forming a habit of using energy economically and efficiently; and at the same time raising awareness of environmental protection and response to climate change.
According to Mr. Dang Hai Dung, Earth Hour should not only stop at 60 minutes of symbolic lights out, but should be spread into regular and continuous actions throughout the year, which are technological innovation, optimizing energy use in production; applying modern energy management systems and forming habits of using energy economically and reasonably in daily life.
