According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, last night and this morning, (April 20), the North had scattered showers and thunderstorms; especially the Northwest had heavy rain in some places.
Rainfall measured from 7:00 p.m. on April 19 to 8:00 a.m. on April 20 at some points exceeded 50 mm, such as Muong Trai (Son La) 64.2 mm, Muong Pon (Dien Bien) 53.8 mm.
In the next 3-6 hours, rainfall in these provinces may increase more commonly by 30-60 mm, in some places over 80 mm.
From the above developments, the meteorological agency warns of the risk of flash floods on small rivers and streams, landslides on slopes and land subsidence due to rain and floods or currents in many communes and wards in 3 provinces of Dien Bien, Son La and Lao Cai. Disaster risk level is determined at level 1.
In Dien Bien, the warning areas include Muong Ang, Muong Lan, Muong Phang, Na Son, Na Tau, Pu Nhi, Quai To, Xa Dung.
In Son La, the warning list covers many areas such as Bac Yen, Binh Thuan, Chieng Hac, Chieng Khuong, Chieng La, Chieng Lao, Chieng Sai, Co Ma, Gia Phu, Kim Bon, Long He, Mai Son, Muong Bam, Muong Bang, Muong Coi, Muong E, Muong Hung, Muong La, Nam Lau, Pac Nga, Phieng Khoai, Phieng Pan, Phu Yen, Quynh Nhai, Suoi To, Ta Hoc, Ta Khoa, Thuan Chau, Tuong Ha, Xim Vang, Yen Chau and Yen Son.
In Lao Cai, at-risk areas include Gia Hoi, Hanh Phuc, Cau Thia ward, Nghia Lo ward, Trung Tam ward, Phinh Ho, Ta Xi Lang, Tram Tau, Van Chan.
Also according to Son La Hydrometeorological Station's assessment, on the night of April 20 and the day of April 21, the locality will still have showers and thunderstorms in some places. In the thunderstorm, there is still a possibility of tornadoes, lightning, hail and strong gusts of wind.
The meteorological agency also noted that localized heavy rains can cause floods, flash floods, landslides in steep terrain areas such as riverbanks, streams, hillsides, and under construction works, while causing flooding in low-lying areas, overloading urban drainage systems and increasing the risk of traffic accidents due to slipperiness and reduced visibility.
The meteorological agency recommends that localities proactively review key points and high-risk areas to prevent, respond, and limit damage caused by extreme thunderstorms.
