Heavily flooded downstream areas, largest reservoir in the North tightens overflow

Phu Tho - The circulation of storm No. 10 caused heavy rain, the Canh Tang reservoir had to tighten its overflow to ensure safety for the downstream area.

According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, due to the influence of storm No. 10, from the evening of September 28 to the afternoon of September 29, Yen Phu commune (Phu Tho province) will have moderate rain, heavy rain and thunderstorms, locally very heavy rain, common rainfall of 150 - 155 mm.

Floods appeared on many bridges and culverts, Hung hamlet, and Bo hamlet, with high water levels. The water level in hamlets related to Canh Tang reservoir such as Hung hamlet, Coi hamlet, Bo hamlet, Trang Da, Nhon hamlet, Vanh hamlet, Vanh Da hamlet was flooded with crops, rice affected about 25 hectares.

In response to the complicated developments of natural disasters, the People's Committee of Yen Phu commune has proposed that Hoa Binh Irrigation Works Exploitation Company Limited close the overflow gate of Canh Tang reservoir to cope with and limit damage to the downstream area.

On the morning of September 30, speaking with reporters, Mr. Bui Tien Dung - Deputy Director of Hoa Binh Irrigation Works Exploitation Company Limited - the unit operating Canh Tang Lake said: "As of 9:30 am this morning, the water level of Canh Tang Lake is at 82.80 m; the capacity contains 61.62 million m3. The unit has closed 1 overflow gate bay, currently there is 1 open gate, the discharge flow through the spillway is 85.18m3/s".

According to Mr. Dung, the operation of Canh Tang Lake is being closely monitored, the discharge flow will be flexibly adjusted depending on the development of floods. The unit also coordinated with local forces to ensure the safety of people in the downstream area in the following days.

According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, on the day and night of September 30, the Northern region will continue to have moderate rain, heavy rain, and some places will have very heavy rain; common rainfall is 40 - 80mm, locally over 150mm.

The focus of rain will be concentrated in Lao Cai and the south of Phu Tho province. During thunderstorms, there is a possibility of tornadoes, lightning and strong gusts of wind, people need to be on guard against the risk of flooding in low-lying areas and landslides in mountainous areas.
