Set up a shack to stop the garbage truck
According to the reporter of Lao Dong Newspaper, as of February 27, people in Hanh Phuc Doan residential group, Dong Quang ward, Thanh Hoa province are still setting up tents, preventing garbage trucks from entering the treatment plant at Dong Nam landfill.

Mr. Van Doan Thai (resident of Hanh Phuc Doan residential group, Dong Quang ward) said that since the 2nd day of Tet, people have felt very uncomfortable because of insects surrounding them and the stench spreading from the Southeast landfill.
Immediately after that, people reflected to the local authorities and functional sectors of Thanh Hoa province. Upon receiving the reflection, the local authorities and functional sectors came to inspect and committed to handling directions. However, in the following days, the waste treatment plant still received and operated, causing the spread of foul odors.
“People have agreed and supported many times to find the best solution, but the matter has not been resolved. Odor and insect pollution are becoming more and more serious. Extremely unfortunately, on the 5th day of Tet, people set up tents and guarded to prevent vehicles from carrying more garbage into the treatment plant at Dong Nam landfill” - Mr. Thai informed.

According to Mr. Thai, the people building shacks is for no other purpose than to request functional sectors, local authorities and waste treatment units to come up with optimal measures that do not cause odor pollution and seriously affect the lives of households living near the landfill.
Also according to the reporter of Lao Dong Newspaper, on February 27, departments, branches, unions and local authorities continued to work with Ecotech Environmental Technology Investment and Development Joint Stock Company - the waste treatment unit at the Southeast landfill - and people in the surrounding area, to come up with treatment directions.
The amount of waste is sometimes double the designed capacity of the factory
Previously, as Lao Dong Newspaper reported, in the first days of the new year 2026, in the central wards of Thanh Hoa province such as Hac Thanh, Ham Rong, Dong Quang, Dong Son, Dong Tien, Nguyet Vien, Quang Phu, a situation of domestic waste being congested and piled up on roads and streets occurred.

The cause was determined to be the sudden increase in waste during Tet, along with the fact that people in Dong Quang ward did not allow garbage trucks to enter the Dong Nam landfill (due to the landfill being overloaded and causing pollution).
After the incident occurred, Thanh Hoa Environment and Urban Joint Stock Company - the waste collection unit - mobilized forces and vehicles to urgently collect and transport the accumulated waste for many days.
Representatives of the leaders of Thanh Hoa Environment and Urban Joint Stock Company said that to handle the accumulated garbage, the unit has worked with a number of other garbage treatment areas in the area and carried out garbage transportation to these points. By February 25, the collection and treatment of accumulated garbage was basically completed.
According to statistics from the Thanh Hoa Provincial Department of Agriculture and Environment, from February 12 to the end of February 19, the total volume of waste received at the Southeast domestic waste treatment plant reached 4,559 tons, an average of about 650 tons/day. On February 16 (29th day of the twelfth lunar month), the amount of waste reached 1,193 tons, 2.38 times the designed capacity of the plant. The sudden increase in waste, coupled with rainy and humid weather, has caused odors and insects to occur, affecting some households in the surrounding area.
Faced with the above situation, on February 22, the Thanh Hoa Department of Agriculture and Environment requested 7 central wards of the province to proactively contact and sign contracts with solid domestic waste treatment units inside and outside the province; and at the same time, divert and transport waste to other treatment areas to reduce the load on the Southeast domestic waste treatment plant, and urgently resolve the backlog of waste.
