According to many people, the mass death of pineapples has caused pineapple growers to stumble, all their capital and investment have suddenly been lost.
Ms. Vu Thi Duyen (59 years old, quarter 10 Bac Son, Quang Trung ward) said that she has been growing pineapples for many years but has never witnessed the death of pineapples as much as it is now.
"My family started planting at the end of 2024, if the weather is favorable, it is expected to be harvested by May 2026. However, recently when I went to the pineapple garden, I saw the leaves turning yellow, rotten at the root and dying in large numbers" - Ms. Duyen choked up.
According to Ms. Duyen, the dead pineapple caused hundreds of millions of VND in damage to her family, including wages, seeds, fertilizers... now considered a total loss.
Similar to Ms. Duyen's family, many pineapple growers in Quang Trung ward are also in a state of decline because the pineapple is dead.
Mr. Vu Van Man - Secretary and Head of Residential Group 10 Bac Son - said that in Quang Trung ward, there are thousands of hectares of pineapple land, mainly concentrated in the old Bac Son area.
"Our residential group has more than 300 hectares of pineapple. In the past month or so, people's pineapples have begun to rot and die. Up to now, the total area has died about 40%, the remaining area continues to show signs of withering and dying, and has not stopped" - Mr. Man informed.
According to Mr. Man, pineapple mainly causes leaf fungal disease. In previous years, only spraying medicine was enough to handle it, the annual mortality rate was insignificant. However, this year, after heavy rains, pineapples began to die en masse, so people suspect that rainwater may contain acid.
Ms. Tran Thi Hoi - Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Quang Trung Ward - said that there is a mass death of pineapples in the area. Currently, the locality is coordinating with neighborhoods to count the damaged pineapple area to report to the authorities and Thanh Hoa province.
According to records, the mass death of pineapples not only occurred in Quang Trung ward but also in many other localities such as Ha Long, Ngoc Trao... in a similar situation.
