On December 11, Mr. Phan Vu Dong Quan - Deputy Director of Quang Ngai Power Company - said that due to the impact of storm No. 13 (Kalmaegi) in November 2025, big waves combined with strong currents caused serious landslides on the coast of Thanh Thuy village (Van Tuong commune), exposing about 20m of 22kV underground cable - the only power source for more than 24,000 people in Ly Son special area.
Immediately after the incident, Quang Ngai Power Company mobilized human and material resources to deploy emergency remedial measures. The construction force erected fences with iron piles and B40 nets to isolate the danger zone, insert sandbags to fix the cable that had been lifted and installed warning signs. At the same time, the unit coordinated with the People's Committee of Van Tuong commune to propagate and advise people and fishermen not to approach the area to ensure safety.

In parallel with the immediate response, Quang Ngai Power Company also hired a specialized consulting unit to survey, assess the current situation and develop a thorough solution. The dossier is being submitted to the Central Power Corporation for consideration and allocation of implementation funding in 2026.
The long-term plan is to have the last underground cable protection embankment located 60m from the edge of the sea, at risk of landslides; at the same time, embank the two sides of the underground cable section in the beach area. We have determined to have sustainable investment solutions to ensure safe power supply for Ly Son special zone in the context of increasingly complex climate change, said Mr. Phan Vu Dong Quan.
According to the Deputy Director of Quang Ngai Power Company, the project to pull the power cable to Ly Son was completed in 2014. However, under the impact of the recent storm No. 13, the beach of Van Tuong commune was seriously eroded and for the first time in more than 10 years, a section of cable was lifted from the sand layer.
Previously, this exposed 22kV cable section was assessed as posing an extremely serious safety risk, which could endanger people and vehicles passing by.
The Van Tuong commune government has assigned the commune police, the Economic Department, the Public Service Supply Center and coastal villages to increase patrols and guarding of landslide areas; strictly prohibit ships and people from approaching or anchoring within 200m around the cable line. Any act of exploitation of soil, sand or digging near this area is absolutely prohibited.
