From 2024 to now, the landslide on the Chay River bank, passing through Thac Ba commune, Lao Cai province, has affected houses and auxiliary works of hundreds of households, in which some houses have been collapsed into the river.
After the rain and flood due to the circulation of storms No. 10 and 11, the landslide situation along the Chay River bank passing through Thac Ba commune continues to be complicated.
Fearing that it would affect their lives, some households had to move to a safe place, waiting for functional agencies to assess the current situation.

In the first days of January 2026, according to Lao Dong's records, the landslide situation along both banks of the Chay River continues. In which, many households have been and are building houses, works, and warehouses on land that have not been granted land use right certificates, have not presented related documents, or use land for improper purposes...
Many households arbitrarily extend and build embankments and auxiliary works encroaching on the Chay River corridor, causing changes in flow.
As one of the three households located in the dangerous landslide area in hamlet 2, Thac Ba commune, Mr. Pham The Mau said: If there are no timely remedial measures, with the current landslide momentum, in just a short time, the water will "swallow" the family's house into the river.

Talking to reporters, Mr. Pham Van Hien - Chairman of Thac Ba Commune People's Committee - said that the whole commune currently has 63 households located in dangerous landslide risk areas on the Chay River bank, including 1 household in hamlet 3 and 2 households in Tien Phong hamlet.
Previously, riverbank erosion rarely occurred, however, since Thac Ba 2 Hydropower Plant accumulated water to generate electricity, along with the complicated situation of rain and floods, the risk of riverbank erosion has increased.

Before the merger of the province, on May 22, 2025, the People's Committee of Yen Binh district (old) organized a field inspection team and determined that there were nearly 80 illegally built works and houses encroaching on the river corridor.
After the merger, local authorities are requesting these households to immediately stop illegal construction; and at the same time propose solutions to completely handle the above situation.

Mr. Hoang Anh Tuan - Director of Thac Ba 2 Hydropower Investment Joint Stock Company - said: The landslide situation has been going on for 1 year since the circulation of storm No. 3 made landfall.
During operation, the plant operates according to the correct procedures, when rain and floods occur, all discharge gates are opened for flow.

After a period of power generation at Thac Ba 2 Hydropower Plant, the company has reviewed and supported 3 households to move their houses safely. Currently, 4 households are affected by garden land and auxiliary works, and the unit has supported building embankments to prevent landslides.
Households whose houses were eroded in the recent floods are not located in the area affected by the hydropower reservoir, so the unit is not responsible" - Mr. Hoang Anh Tuan added.
