Plant in Can Tho requests to increase solid waste treatment volume by 40 tons/day

Can Tho - Can Tho Solid Waste Treatment Plant is receiving waste exceeding the designed capacity and proposes to add 40 tons/day to meet treatment needs.

After nearly 7 years of operation, the Can Tho Solid Waste Treatment Plant (Truong Xuan commune, Can Tho city) has treated 1,257,442 tons of waste, contributing to a significant improvement in domestic waste treatment in the area. However, along with the operation process, the enterprise proposed adjusting treatment unit prices and some related mechanisms to ensure long-term operational efficiency.

Mr. Tran Chi Hung - Vice Chairman of Can Tho City People's Committee - said that the proposals of businesses and city leaders have assigned relevant departments and branches to coordinate in reviewing and evaluating to have appropriate treatment plans, especially for the content of fly ash treatment. In addition, it also encourages the factory to continue to expand its scale and invest in more hazardous waste treatment lines, medical waste, and pesticide packaging.

According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Can Tho City, the total volume of domestic solid waste collected and treated in the city is on average about 1,712.95 tons/day. Currently, there are about 19 units collecting and transporting domestic solid waste in the city; 5 plants/domestic solid waste treatment areas.

Solid waste treatment plants/areas, solid waste landfills in the city include: burning for electricity generation; burning without energy recovery; composting.

The landfill/open landfill area currently has 30 operating landfills, with an area of 1-2 hectares, a total collection volume of about 157 tons/day, and a total amount of accumulated waste of about 100,000 tons. Can Tho City currently has 17 old solid domestic waste landfills that have stopped operating but still have accumulated waste.

The project was started on June 30, 2017. On November 26, 2018, the plant was recognized for commercial operation, connected to the national grid and officially inaugurated on December 8, 2018.

The plant has a designed scale of 400 tons of waste/day, an area of 5.33ha, with a total investment of 1.057 billion VND in the form of foreign direct investment (FDI). Can Tho City currently pays waste treatment costs at 362,675 VND/ton (excluding VAT and fly ash treatment costs), this price is adjusted from the 6th year since the plant went into operation.

According to updated data as of April 10, 2026, the total accumulated amount of waste received and treated by the plant reached 1,257,442 tons, including 5,831 tons of waste from O Mon landfill. Total electricity output generated to the grid reached more than 410.9 million kWh. All ash and slag and leachate generated during treatment are recovered and reused.

In the total operating time, the average amount of waste received is about 487 tons/day, higher than the initial designed capacity. The leachate rate accounts for about 23.5%, equivalent to 115m3/day, while the amount of waste put into the incinerator averages 372 tons/day.

Regarding the operating mechanism, the enterprise has reported and asked for opinions from functional agencies on assigning responsibility for fly ash treatment, and at the same time proposed adjusting the waste treatment price to 500,000 VND/ton (including VAT and fly ash treatment costs). This is considered an issue to be considered because the cost of fly ash treatment is increasing.

In addition, the operating unit said that after April 10, 2026, the average amount of waste received is about 425 tons/day and proposed to increase by about 40 tons/day according to actual needs.
