On March 9, in an exchange with a reporter from Lao Dong Newspaper, a representative of Dong Quang Ward People's Committee, Thanh Hoa province, said that currently the waste treatment plant at Dong Nam landfill cannot receive more waste for treatment because the amount of accumulated waste is too large and has not been completely treated.

Currently, for the waste treatment plant of Ecotech Environmental Technology Investment and Development Joint Stock Company, Thanh Hoa Provincial People's Committee has not yet agreed to receive more waste. The reason is that there is about nearly 3,000 tons of waste accumulated in the plant" - a representative of Dong Quang Ward People's Committee informed.
Also according to this local representative, when the factory finishes treating the remaining waste and overcomes other shortcomings, functional agencies will conduct inspections, and only if conditions are met will the factory be allowed to receive more new waste.
Regarding the amount of domestic waste generated daily in 7 central wards of Thanh Hoa province, environmental units are still collecting and transporting it to some other landfills in the area, in order to ensure the environment and urban aesthetics.
Previously, as Lao Dong Newspaper reported, in the first days of 2026, in the central wards of Thanh Hoa province such as Hac Thanh, Ham Rong, Dong Quang, Dong Son, Dong Tien, Nguyet Vien, Quang Phu, there was a situation of household waste accumulating and piling up on many roads.
The cause was determined to be the sudden increase in garbage during Tet. In addition, some residents of Dong Quang ward did not allow garbage trucks to enter the Southeast landfill area due to concerns about overload and pollution.
The people setting up camps and preventing garbage trucks from entering the treatment plant took place for many days. After that, thanks to the propaganda and mobilization of functional sectors and local authorities, people dismantled camps and no longer focused on preventing garbage trucks.
However, in the following days, although people no longer stopped garbage trucks from entering the Southeast landfill, the factory still could not receive more garbage due to the large amount of accumulated garbage that had not been treated.
Previously, according to statistics from the Thanh Hoa Provincial Department of Agriculture and Environment, from February 12 to February 19, the total volume of waste received at the Southeast domestic waste treatment plant reached 4,559 tons, an average of about 650 tons/day. On February 16 (29th day of the twelfth lunar month), the amount of waste reached 1,193 tons, 2.38 times the designed capacity.
The sudden increase in garbage, along with rainy and humid weather, has caused odors and insects to occur, affecting some neighboring households.
Faced with the above situation, the Thanh Hoa Provincial Department of Agriculture and Environment proposed that 7 central wards proactively contact and sign contracts with solid domestic waste treatment units inside and outside the province; and at the same time, divert and transport waste to other treatment areas to reduce the load on the Southeast domestic waste treatment plant, and soon resolve the amount of accumulated waste.
