Lam Dong - La Gi estuary dredging contractor will be considered for contract termination if it continues to be behind schedule, affecting ship safety.

On July 27, the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Lam Dong province said that it had requested the Management Board of provincial fishing ports to report on the dredging progress and channel clearance of La Gi estuary before August 10. If the construction unit does not ensure progress, the Department requests to propose a plan to terminate the contract or terminate the project according to regulations.

The direction was issued after the Department's working delegation and representatives of departments, branches and localities inspected the actual progress of the La Gi estuary emergency dredging project - where a ship carrying about 500 anchovies ran aground and sank at the estuary.

The La Gi estuary dredging and channel clearance project is invested by the Management Board of fishing ports of Lam Dong province. According to the direction of the Provincial People's Committee, the project must be completed before April 30, 2026. However, so far only about 26,000m3 has been implemented, the progress is slow and prolonged.

Through inspection, the working group recorded many shortcomings such as construction vehicles and equipment frequently stopping operation; sand pumping pipeline system leaking and damaged but slow to be repaired.

The sea mouth continues to be silted up, causing the channel to not be cleared, posing a potential risk of unsafety for ships entering and leaving, especially during the rainy and storm season, and at the same time greatly affecting fishermen's exploitation activities.

Mr. Nguyen Van Chien - Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Lam Dong province requested the Management Board of provincial fishing ports to review and clarify the responsibilities of collectives and individuals related to delays and fully report the causes and shortcomings.

The delay in channel clearance and dredging of La Gi estuary leads to many consequences. Causing public opinion, negativity in society and reducing the effectiveness of direction and administration of the Provincial People's Committee and Department leaders" - Mr. Chien frankly pointed out.

In particular, leaders of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Lam Dong province set a deadline of no later than August 10, 2026, the Management Board of provincial fishing ports must report on the progress of dredging and clearing the channel of La Gi port.

If the construction unit does not ensure the implementation, propose measures to terminate, terminate the project or terminate the contractor" - Mr. Chien emphasized.

In addition, the Department requests the investor to coordinate with the construction unit to rebuild the dredging plan suitable to the actual conditions, mobilize maximum manpower and vehicles to accelerate the progress. The consulting unit must measure and accept in accordance with regulations and urgently propose adjustments to the capital plan and channel direction of the La Gi port storm shelter area.

As Lao Dong newspaper reported, on the afternoon of July 25, fishery logistics service vessel BTh 96120TS carrying about 500 anchovies baskets ran aground and sank at La Gi estuary. The incident did not cause any casualties but property damage is estimated at 150 million VND.
