Heavy rain from June 20 caused flooding at 130 locations in the whole Thai Nguyen province, with Thai Nguyen City alone having 33 locations.
According to statistics, floods have killed 1 person, affected hundreds of hectares of crops, and many roads have been flooded and landslides, causing traffic jams. The initial estimated damage is over 50 billion VND.
Currently, the water level of the Cau River has passed the flood peak, decreased rapidly, and the weather is no longer raining. The authorities are continuing to support people to overcome the consequences.

However, the anxiety of Thai Nguyen City residents is still constant when heavy rain causes many arterial roads to be flooded. In the past 4 days, people have been fed up with local flooding. Many roads only need heavy rain for about 1 hour to be deeply flooded. People and vehicles are in a situation of tears and laughter.
Prolonged rains caused traffic disruption in the city. Hundreds of vehicles stalled, people waded through the water.
The flooded black spots in Thai Nguyen City include Minh Cau, Hoang Gia streets, San Nen intersection, Quang Vinh, Thai Nguyen University area, Hoang Van Thu, Luong Ngoc Quyen...
These are all key roads in the city with a high traffic volume. Prolonged rain caused flooding of 40 to 60cm, many areas were flooded with water. It took several hours for the water to recede.
Flooded areas have appeared locally, causing people to miss their travel time. At Thai Nguyen University, every time the flood is deep, students are forced to wait for hours to get around.
In fact, these roads have been black spots flooded for many years. If it rains heavily, the water will not drain in time, causing local congestion and flooding.

Student Nguyen Van Dong said: "Every time it rains heavily, the road connecting the gate of the University of Science to Bac Son Street is flooded. This situation makes students very difficult, affecting their daily activities".
According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoa (Phan Dinh Phung ward), people on Minh Cau street are very familiar with the scene of flooding every time it rains. Many families had to install partitions to prevent water from the road from overflowing into their homes. During the rainy season, I was anxious, lost sleep and appetite.
Flooding on many streets in Thai Nguyen City comes from the old drainage system, built decades ago. Many streets have small, degraded sewers, which cannot meet the needs of prolonged heavy rain.

At the same time, the rapid urbanization has caused ponds, low-lying fields, and the area of natural water seepage to increasingly narrow. Concrete road surfaces and sidewalks cause overload for drainage. Rainwater drains slowly, even refluxing from the sewers onto the road surface.
In the case of rainfall below 90mm/hour, the system still operates effectively, only stagnating locally in a few low-lying areas. When there is heavy rain from 100mm, the system is quickly overloaded, causing flooding lasting from 2 to 3 hours in many areas.

In 2025, Thai Nguyen Urban Infrastructure Development and Drainage Company Limited has developed a natural disaster prevention plan, focusing on minimizing local flooding on the streets.
Since the beginning of the year, the unit has maintained, dredged, and drained about 11km of sewers and ditches, improving drainage capacity.
However, local flooding on major roads still makes people bored and worried every time there is wind.
