No more fear of floods
In the 2-storey flood shelter house that Ha Tinh province called for from socialized resources to build since 2023, the family of Ms. Truong Thi Nhat (41 years old, residing in Tien Phong village) is very happy and excited to have gone through 2 rainy and flood seasons without having to worry and be bothered by having to stay with relatives on the shore. In particular, the family's 5 children no longer have to eat, study, and live with their parents drifting on a boat that is also their home like before. "Since having a house, our lives have been stable, we can settle down and work with peace of mind, our children have a place to live and study properly, and their lives have clearly improved," Ms. Nhat shared.
Similarly, Mr. Nguyen Van Duong (residing in Tien Phong village) shared that before, his family of 4 lived on a very cramped boat, affecting the children's daily activities and studies. Although he loved his children, the life of fishing was just enough to eat, and his parents did not know what to do when they could not even buy a piece of land on the shore.
However, with the attention of the government in organizing land allocation planning and calling for socialization to build spacious flood-proof houses to be donated in 2023, from now on, the life of his family and 23 other households here will be stable, and their children will have better conditions for studying and living.
Practical flood-proof houses
From the reality that Tien Phong village, Quang Vinh commune is located in a low-lying area, prone to flooding, the people's lives are difficult. In particular, this fishing village has 24 homeless households, living a miserable life on boats, so the leaders of Ha Tinh province have called for socialization to build 24 flood-proof houses for fishing households on a 1.5-hectare land in Tien Phong village with a total cost of more than 9 billion VND.
24 houses are designed in a 2-storey flood-avoidance style, more than 110m2 wide. The first floor is only filled with pillars, no surrounding walls, and is used as a place to store means, equipment, and production tools. The second floor is surrounded by walls, inside the living room is 30m2 wide, two bedrooms are nearly 30m2 wide, with a kitchen and a toilet.
Mr. Hoang Xuan Hung - Vice Chairman of Duc Tho District People's Committee - shared: "After 2 rainy and flood seasons, the design of those houses has proven to be suitable. Perhaps this is also a model of flood-avoiding houses that should be replicated in flood-prone areas in many other localities."
