Harsh natural conditions
Buon Don is the border of Dak Lak province with 46.7km of border adjacent to Mondulkiri province (Cambodia). There are 29 ethnic groups living together here, accounting for nearly 30% of the district's population.
The natural conditions in the border area of Buon Don district are not very favorable. Here, the climate is harsh, the dry season is hot and dry, the rainy season is flooded, causing heavy damage to the people.
The barren land and scarce water resources also make the daily life and production of the local people difficult. Not to mention, the transport infrastructure system is not developed compared to the demand, affecting trade, promoting the local economy also faces many difficulties.
Faced with the above challenges, the poverty rate in the district remains high, at over 5,000 households. This has caused concern for local authorities. Faced with this reality, in recent times, all levels of government have had many policies to support, eliminate hunger, and reduce poverty for the people, especially ethnic minorities.
The most exciting thing is that by implementing well the policies of the Party and the State, through programs and projects to eliminate hunger and reduce poverty, Buon Don district has gradually helped people develop the economy, escape poverty, and take control of their lives.
Escape poverty thanks to support from the Party and State
In Krong Na commune (Buon Don district), many ethnic minority households have escaped poverty thanks to the timely and appropriate support of the Party and State.
A typical example of poverty reduction is the family of Mrs. H'Khua HDoh, residing in Jang Lanh hamlet. Previously, Mrs. H'Khua's family had been a poor household for many years.
The reason is that Mrs. H'Khua HDoh's family has little land for production. Moreover, the land they have is also barren. Therefore, in previous years, the main source of income for Mrs. H'Khua HDoh's family was working for hire, with unstable income, always in a state of shortage.
At this time, the authorities realized that Mrs. H'Khua's family was very hard-working, but to escape poverty, they needed a fishing rod. In 2017, Krong Na commune supported Mrs. H'Khua's family with 2 goats. Receiving this valuable gift, Mrs. H'Khua HDoh's family was very happy, because from now on they had another source of livelihood.
After that, Mrs. H'Khua HDoh's family invested in a barn and spent a lot of time taking care of the pair of goats. Over time, the first pair of goats multiplied into a herd.
By 2020, realizing that raising cows had a lot of potential, Ms. H’Khua decided to sell some goats and buy 2 cows. To date, her family’s herd has increased to 6 cows. In 2023, her family escaped poverty.
In the same village as Mrs. H'Khua, Mr. Y Chit Nie's family also escaped poverty in 2023. One of the supports that helped his family escape poverty was thanks to the support of 2 breeding cows from Krong Na commune in 2022.
With this support from the local government, Mr. Y Chit’s family had more motivation to increase production. Thanks to that, his family escaped poverty. He was very touched and grateful for the attention of the Party and the State that helped his family escape poverty.
According to the People's Committee of Buon Don district, not only the above-mentioned families, up to now, the rate of poor and near-poor households has decreased significantly over the years. Currently, the whole Buon Don district has 5,312 poor households, accounting for 29.98% (down 3.96% compared to 2022), reaching and exceeding the target set out in the Resolution.
