The project to expand the Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh expressway section of the Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay expressway has a total investment of nearly VND15,000 billion.
The project will be implemented from 2025-2027.
In the total investment for project implementation, public investment capital (state budget) is VND 6,500 billion (including VND 2,500 billion from increased central budget revenue in 2024 and VND 4,000 billion from medium-term capital in the period of 2026-2030); VEC's capital (including interest during the construction period) is nearly VND 1,700 billion; commercial bank and credit institution loans are more than VND 6,700 billion.
The project to expand the Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh expressway section is about 22 km long, the center of the project route basically follows the old road, expanding to both sides, while the section across Long Thanh bridge is expanded to the right side of the existing route (downstream).
In particular, the section from the Ring Road 2 intersection to the Ring Road 3 intersection, over 4.8 km long, will be invested in expanding from 4 to 8 lanes; the section from the Ring Road 3 intersection to the intersection with the Bien Hoa - Vung Tau Expressway, over 14.7 km long, will be invested in expanding from 4 to 10 lanes.
Along with that, invest in building a new Long Thanh bridge (more than 2.3 km long) with a scale of 5 complete lanes in the direction from Ho Chi Minh City to Dong Nai, on the right side of the existing bridge.
The project will also invest in the complete construction of 5 interconnecting intersections on the route, and direct intersections according to the extended design in accordance with the expansion scale.
The project investment goal is to complete the expressway at a scale in accordance with the approved planning, meeting the increasingly high demand for transportation, shortening time, and reducing transportation costs.
In particular, it contributes to smooth connections from Long Thanh airport to Ho Chi Minh City, serving socio-economic development, ensuring national defense and security for the key economic region in the South.
The Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay Expressway was put into operation in phase 1 with a scale of 4 lanes since 2015. However, over the years, due to the rapid increase in traffic volume, especially during rush hour and on weekends, there has been overload and local congestion at the first sections of the route, the section of Long Thanh bridge and the National Highway 51 intersection.
According to VEC, the traffic volume on this expressway has increased by an average of more than 10.4%/year. Up to now, this expressway has been fully occupied, especially the Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh section has exceeded the limit of its capacity.
