On January 1, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Gia Lai province said that the functional sector is preserving the landscape of the Kon Ha Nung plateau biosphere reserve. This activity aims to develop the socio-economy and improve the lives of people in the forest buffer zone.
Kon Ha Nung Plateau is recognized by UNESCO as a world biosphere reserve with an area of 413,512 hectares. Including the entire Kon Ka Kinh National Park and Kon Chu Rang Nature Reserve.
The biosphere reserve covers the area of An Khe town and 5 districts of Dak Doa, Mang Yang, KBang, Chu Pah, Dak Po, Gia Lai province.
The two core areas are Kon Ka Kinh National Park and Kon Chu Rang Nature Reserve, which have primeval forests, vegetation with a diverse system of lakes and streams. The cool, temperate climate is regulated by a rich flora and fauna.
Kon Ka Kinh National Park in the reserve is a source of food with valuable vegetables and medicinal leaves. This national park currently has about 1,754 species of higher plants, 91 species of lower plants, 87 species of mammals, 326 species of birds, 77 species of reptiles and many rare and endangered species of animals.
Notably, there are three endemic mammal species of Indochina including the grey-shanked douc langur, the Central Vietnamese red-cheeked gibbon and the giant muntjac.
According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Gia Lai province, along with conservation, the relevant authorities are researching to create livelihood models for indigenous people who depend on forests and exploit the benefits of tourism economic development.
The indigenous Ba Na and Jrai people living around the buffer zone of the forest with diverse cultures and customs will attract visitors.
People and local authorities work together to protect forests sustainably, increase revenue from forests through forest environmental service fees, forest protection contracts and the sale of forest carbon credits in the near future.
