Long Thanh airport is about to open, An Phu intersection is still messy

Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh airport is about to open, connecting routes are speeding up, but An Phu intersection is still unfinished, risking becoming a "bottleneck" on the road to the airport.

Started at the end of 2022 with a total capital of more than 3,400 billion VND, An Phu intersection is built on a three-story scale, including a tunnel and an overpass system, connecting Mai Chi Tho Avenue, Luong Dinh Cua Street, Dong Van Cong with the Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay expressway.

This is one of the important traffic hubs at the eastern gateway of Ho Chi Minh City, playing a connecting role in the East, Cat Lai port, Dong Nai and Long Thanh airport.

However, the An Phu intersection project has been delayed twice. From the completion plan at the end of 2025, the completion time has now been adjusted to the second quarter of 2027 and handed over in the third quarter of 2027.

While the An Phu intersection cannot be completed, projects on the corridor connecting Long Thanh airport are simultaneously accelerating. Two projects to expand access roads and the Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay expressway are expected to be completed by the end of 2026.

When Long Thanh airport is expected to be commercially operated at the end of this year, the traffic volume on the eastern corridor of Ho Chi Minh City is forecast to increase sharply. If the An Phu intersection is not synchronously completed, this connecting route is at risk of forming a "bottleneck".

Recorded at the construction site, some main items of An Phu intersection have been completed and put into operation such as the underpass connecting Mai Chi Tho Avenue with the expressway, the overpass from the expressway to Mai Chi Tho and the branch into Dong Van Cong street.

These projects initially contribute to reducing traffic pressure in the area. However, because the entire intersection has not been completed synchronously, the operating efficiency has not yet reached expectations.

Many items of An Phu intersection are delayed. For example, the N4 bridge branch, serving cars turning right from Dong Van Cong street to Mai Chi Tho, is expected to open to traffic at the end of July 2026.

However, this bridge branch is still under construction, with items such as asphalt concrete pavement, installation of railings, expansion joints and lighting systems.

Notably, at the branch of bridge N1. 2 connecting from Luong Dinh Cua street to the expressway, the construction unit has completed the structure of bridge piers from T3 to T8 within the An Phu intersection. However, the road section at the beginning of the bridge, abutment M1 and piers T1, T2 located on Luong Dinh Cua street have not yet been constructed.

Also in this area, the project to expand Luong Dinh Cua street to 4 lanes in the direction from Mai Chi Tho to Nguyen Hoang has not yet been implemented.

According to the Ho Chi Minh City Traffic Construction Investment Project Management Board (TCIP - the investor), the area to be handed over for the implementation of the two items is about more than 2.2 hectares, belonging to An Phu Development Urban Area and located in the Luong Dinh Cua road boundary.

This area has about 64 households and organizations that need compensation and clearance. The above area is related to 3 projects including An Phu Development Urban Area, Luong Dinh Cua road expansion and An Phu intersection.

Legal obstacles lasting more than 10 years have prevented site clearance from being completed. This is also the biggest obstacle to the completion progress of the entire An Phu intersection.

To remove difficulties, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee has issued a plan for compensation, support, and resettlement and requested to complete this work before November 30, 2026.

Binh Trung Ward has estimated compensation costs of about 2,085 billion VND and is completing procedures for implementation.

According to TCIP, as soon as the site is handed over, the contractor will relocate the technical infrastructure and construct the N1. 2 bridge branch combined with the expansion of Luong Dinh Cua street. The expected construction time is about 5 months, completed on April 30, 2027.
