Ngan Pho riverbank erosion makes people uneasy

Ha Tinh - The Ngan Pho riverbank section passing through Yen Long village (Son Giang commune) is eroded close to houses and livestock facilities, causing many households to worry and be insecure.

According to reporters of Lao Dong Newspaper, the Ngan Pho riverbank section passing through Yen Long village stretching more than 1 km is heavily eroded. Among them, some landslide locations have caused cracks, subsidence, and damage to the kitchen area and livestock facilities of people.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Thin (50 years old, residing in Yen Long village) said that the Ngan Pho riverbank behind her garden has been eroded since previous years, and the most severe erosion occurred during the rainstorm at the end of 2025. At that time, a piece of land more than 10m long was pulled down into the river, damaging a corner of the kitchen area.

A few months ago, seeing that the landslide situation was at risk of continuing, my family had to hire trucks to dump hundreds of trucks of soil for leveling, costing more than 100 million VND," Ms. Thin shared.

In addition to embanking, Ms. Thin's family as well as many households along this riverbank have driven bamboo stakes and planted bamboo on the riverbank to limit landslides.

According to Ms. Thin, landslides continue to threaten, especially during the rainy and storm season, making her family very uneasy. Therefore, she hopes that the Provincial People's Committee and functional sectors will pay attention and allocate funds to implement the riverbank embankment project to prevent landslides, helping people feel secure in living.

The Ngan Pho riverbank section passing through Ms. Phan Thi Tuyet's house (residing in Yen Long village) was also heavily eroded, causing large cracks in the house foundation and showing signs of gradual subsidence.

Ms. Tuyet said that many years ago, her family planted very large bamboo bushes to prevent landslides. However, after many rainy and storm seasons, landslides swept the bamboo bushes into the river. The riverbank is now close to livestock facilities and the kitchen area, causing anxiety and insecurity.

My family has spent a lot of money to hire trucks to carry soil to dump and level to prevent landslides. But it is also impossible to resist landslides every rainy and flood season," Ms. Tuyet worried.

Like the wishes of many other families, Ms. Tuyet hopes that the state will implement a riverbank embankment project to prevent landslides to ensure the safety of property and lives for people here.

Mr. Nguyen Truong Giang - Chairman of Son Giang Commune People's Committee - said that the Ngan Pho riverbank section passing through Yen Long village was eroded for more than 1 km, affecting 30 households, in which some eroded locations have approached people's houses.

After the heavy rain and storm at the end of 2025 caused severe landslides, the locality has supported a part of the funding and mobilized excavators to excavate and fill soil, and drive bamboo stakes to temporarily reinforce the riverbank, limiting landslides. However, that is only a temporary measure.

According to Mr. Nguyen Truong Giang, to effectively prevent landslides, it is necessary to have a riverbank embankment project with a large budget, from tens to hundreds of billions of VND.

The locality has also proposed to higher authorities to pay attention to and invest funds to build embankments to prevent landslides, but it has not been resolved yet.

Chairman of Son Giang Commune People's Committee said that while there is no riverbank embankment project, in the rainy and storm season, the locality must develop a plan and plan to evacuate households affected by landslides to safe places.
