A landslide nearly 5,000 m2 due to Storm Yagi
Pearl reservoirs of the project of building a reservoir and irrigation works supplying fresh water in Tran Chau commune (Cat Ba Island, Hai Phong).
The lake has a capacity of 298,000 m3, the lake is 5 m high, the bottom of the lake is made of concrete, the bottom has a black sand, the roof of the lake with a precast concrete sheet M200, below is 2 layers of geotextile and waterproofing membrane. The project has been temporarily handed over and put into use since 2021.
Reported by reporters, current and embankments of freshwater lake seriously degraded, many landslides affecting the quality of the project, losing beauty when the pearl lake is located on the coastal road from Cai Vien ferry to the center of Cat Ba tourist area.
Worth mentioning, in August 2022, freshwater lake also occurred the same landslide. According to the Management Board of the Construction Investment Project of Hai Phong Agricultural and Rural Development works (now the Management Board of the Investment Project Construction of Hai Phong Transport and Rural Projects), the heavy rain lasted from 26 to 28.8.2022 has eroded a number of lake roofs. In 2023, this project was repaired.
However, after typhoon No. 3 Yagi in 2024, Ho Tran Chau continued to be damaged. According to the inspection record of the authorities (September 20, 2024), the lake railing (the road side) was subsided and damaged on the road about 35 m long. 22 Location of the lake roof slide, the length of the lake roof is about 480.5 m, the landslide area is about 4,800 m2. The sidewalk on the road is about 9 m long. The degradation is long.
Soon overcome and repair
It is known that the pearl lake project is invested by the Management Board of the Investment Project on construction of agricultural works and rural development in Hai Phong City Rural Development (now merged and belongs to the Management Board of Investment Project Construction of Hai Phong Transport and Agricultural Projects) as an investor. In February 2021, the project was temporarily handed over to the People's Committee of Cat Hai District, Hai Phong Water Supply Joint Stock Company.
A representative of Hai Phong Water Supply Joint Stock Company said that the pearl freshwater lake is a public property. Therefore, Hai Phong Water Supply Joint Stock Company only exploits the lake to produce clean water, providing people with Cat Ba island district, not a project management unit. Facing the landslide in the pearl lake, the unit has asked the authorities to soon take remedial and repair measures to ensure the water supply work for the island.
According to information from the People's Committee of Cat Hai District, since Storm Yagi (September 2024), the district has sent 2 dispatches to the branches and reports to the city to soon allocate capital to overcome and repair this freshwater lake. However, up to now, the pearl lake has not been repaired.
