Landslides occur continuously in the Mekong Delta
On September 20, on the banks of the Tien River, in Cao Lanh Ward, Dong Thap Province, a landslide occurred with a length of about 100m, eating about 20m deep into the bank, completely damaging 7 houses, with estimated damage of over 2 billion VND. This landslide has not been fixed yet, so new landslides continue to occur.
By the afternoon of September 24, on the banks of the Tien River in Group 1, Nguyen Huong Street, Tan Tich Hamlet (the two banks of the Tien River) also in Cao Lanh Ward (Dong Thap Province) had a landslide with a length of about 150m, eating about 15m inland. This landslide affected 18 houses and 3 graves; of which 5 were completely eroded, 4 were under erosion, and 9 were at risk of landslides.
In Vinh Long province, on August 10, a section of the Giao Hoa River bank in Chau Thanh Hamlet, Giao Long Commune experienced a 30m long landslide and showed signs of continuing to erode with a 30m long section nearby. The landslide completely damaged a 30m long embankment, causing subsidence and cracking of the rural traffic road surface, affecting traffic, travel and the lives of people in the area, with a total estimated damage of over 2 billion VND.

Vinh Long, Dong Thap declare a state of emergency
The People's Committee of Vinh Long province has issued a decision to announce an emergency situation of landslides on the Giao Hoa riverbank (in the area of Self-managed People's Group No. 6, Chau Thanh Hamlet, Giao Long Commune), 60m long, dangerous level of landslides.
Accordingly, the People's Committee of Vinh Long province requested functional agencies and local authorities to urgently deploy many response and remedial measures to prevent and minimize damage caused by landslides. The People's Committee of Vinh Long province assigned the People's Committee of Giao Long commune to place signs and warn of landslides; widely notify people about the landslides in this area so that people know, proactively prevent and avoid them in daily life and production, ensure safety and no traffic at the above location. At the same time, deploy forces to closely monitor landslides; prepare materials, human resources, and means, and be ready to respond promptly when landslides continue to threaten the safety of the State and people's lives and property.
In addition, support and propagate to mobilize households in landslide areas to relocate to safe places according to regulations and perform other tasks according to their authority; regularly report the landslide situation to the Department of Agriculture and Environment.
The People's Committee of Vinh Long province requested the Department of Agriculture and Environment to preside over and coordinate with the authorities of Giao Long commune to monitor the landslide developments; synthesize and report on the damage caused by landslides according to regulations; coordinate with the Agricultural Project Management Board of Vinh Long province to survey and propose solutions to handle landslides.
In Dong Thap province, after the landslide on the Tien River bank on Nguyen Huong Street (Tan Tich Hamlet and Tinh Hung Hamlet), in Cao Lanh Ward, Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Tran Tri Quang signed a decision to announce an emergency situation of landslides on the Tien River on Nguyen Huong Street. Accordingly, the People's Committee of Dong Thap province requested the People's Committee of Cao Lanh ward to coordinate with the Department of Agriculture and Environment to deploy necessary solutions to prevent landslides arising while waiting for solutions to handle the problem. At the same time, coordinate with the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of the ward to organize a campaign to collect, receive and allocate legal resources according to regulations to promptly support affected households to soon stabilize their lives.
The People's Committee of Dong Thap province requested the Department of Agriculture and Environment to urgently conduct a survey and assessment to determine the scope of impact that needs to be handled, measures that need to be implemented immediately and propose solutions for fundamental handling; advise the Provincial People's Committee to issue an order to build emergency works to handle and overcome landslides before September 30, 2025.
According to the Irrigation Department of Dong Thap province, from the beginning of the year to August 30, 2025, there have been 7 landslides on the Tien River in Dong Thap province. Of which, there was 1 serious incident at Thuong Thoi Tien embankment located in Thuong Phuoc commune, with a landslide length of 508m and a landslide area of 3,116m2. Landslides in Dong Thap province have occurred in 100 cases, causing subsidence with a total length of more than 14.9km, collapsing 1 house, with total damage from landslides estimated at about 158 billion VND.
