Following the posts on social media sites about traffic in recent days, the topic of traffic lights and new fines according to Decree 168/2024/ND-CP has received special attention from the public. Many people wonder why, as soon as the fine for running a red light was increased, a series of faulty light poles appeared. However, in reality, the situation of faulty traffic lights has been reported many times before, not just now.
Traffic lights are faulty for many reasons, it can be due to power outage, signal loss, or recently the Traffic Police Department (Traffic Police, Ministry of Public Security) informed that the cause of the situation of "green light suddenly turning red" (light jumping - PV) is due to some old generation traffic lights, which must be controlled manually, so there is a delay when adjusting the light cycle during the day.
To overcome this situation, the Traffic Police Department has issued a document directing local police to coordinate with relevant agencies to review and repair traffic lights, and recommend that traffic light operators and managers promptly upgrade old lights.
In Hanoi, in 2024, the Maintenance Department (Hanoi Department of Transport) repaired and replaced 1,241 traffic lights and 475 control cabinets. In response to people's complaints about the "light jumping" phenomenon in recent times, the Hanoi Department of Transport has conducted a review and requested relevant units to inspect and fix this situation as soon as possible.
According to the actual observations of the reporter in Hanoi, some intersections that were previously reported by the people to have the phenomenon of "jumping lights", such as Hoang Quoc Viet - Pham Van Dong, Nguyen Chi Thanh - Lang... at the time the reporter was present, the lights were operating normally. Many road users also shared that the phenomenon of "jumping lights" does not occur continuously, nor does it have any specific rules or time.
"It often happens suddenly. If it happened continuously and had a pattern, people would have proactively avoided it or reported it to the authorities," said Nguyen Hung (Quoc Oai district, Hanoi).
Previously, a representative of the Traffic Police Department confirmed that violations determined to be caused by traffic light errors will not be punished. However, people are not only worried about being “wrongly” punished, but also worried about traffic accidents if the faulty light poles are not promptly dealt with.
Recently, sharing with Lao Dong Newspaper reporters about the situation of many faulty traffic lights in Quang Tri, the Director of the Department of Transport, Deputy Head of the Traffic Safety Committee of Quang Tri province - said that in case of a traffic accident caused by a malfunction of the traffic lights and due to delay in repairing and overcoming the damage, the relevant units will be fully responsible before the law.
