On the morning of January 8, fog covered the entire city of Sa Dec, Dong Thap province. This was considered the most severe fog in many years when the roads and fields were so foggy that it was impossible to see the way.
To move, vehicles must go slowly and turn on lights to ensure safety. Because the fog appeared in the morning, right at the time when students go to work and school, it affected people's movement. It was not until after 9am this morning that the fog gradually cleared, and vehicles returned to normal.
In addition to affecting people's travel and daily activities, fog appearing in the early morning is also warned to affect agricultural production activities, especially at this time when farmers in Sa Dec Flower Village are focusing on taking care of Tet flower areas.
Mr. Tran Thanh Binh - a rose grower in An Hoa ward, Sa Dec city - worriedly said: "Every time I see fog, I worry because roses are very sensitive to the weather. Fog is often accompanied by frost that damages the leaves, affecting the quality of the plants and flowers. After each fog, I have to increase the use of nutrients so that the plants are not affected, which increases the cost."
Mr. Nguyen Van Be Ba in Tan Khanh Dong commune is even more worried because more than 1,000 baskets of Korean raspberry chrysanthemums of his family are in the process of flowering to sell for Tet. Mr. Be Ba shared: “Raspberry chrysanthemums are suitable for sunny weather. If fog appears continuously, it is very dangerous because at this stage the plants are flowering, encountering fog, stagnant water greatly affects the quality of the flowers. In addition, if there is a lot of fog, pests and diseases will also increase and be difficult to control, easily affecting the quality of Tet flowers.”
According to agricultural experts, the increased fog increases the humidity in the air, causing fungi to grow rapidly, causing harm to many crops. Therefore, farmers need to regularly visit their fields and gardens to promptly detect harmful diseases for prevention.
If there is a lot of fog, use nets to cover the ornamental flower areas to limit the impact and water after the fog clears. At the same time, increase nutrition and spray pesticides to prevent fungi and pests for plants.
