On February 17 (the 1st day of Tet), the whole country recorded 46 traffic accidents, killing 24 people and injuring 41 people; a decrease of 21 cases, a decrease of 8 deaths and a decrease of 10 injuries compared to the same period last year.
Previously, on February 16 (29th Tet), the whole country recorded 50 accidents, 28 deaths, 31 injuries; a sharp decrease in all three criteria compared to the same period in 2025.
The above results reflect the determination of functional forces in implementing peak plans to ensure traffic order and safety.
Continuous patrols and inspections, strictly handling violations such as alcohol concentration violations, speeding, not wearing helmets... have created a clear deterrent effect.
Along with that, propaganda work is promoted before and during Tet, helping people raise awareness and proactively choose safer behaviors when participating in traffic.
The awareness "if you've drunk alcohol, don't drive", "if you get in the car, you have to fasten your seatbelt" gradually becomes a standard of conduct, no longer a slogan.
Although accidents have decreased sharply, 46 cases in one Tet day is still a thought-provoking number. 24 lives lost in just the 1st day of Tet is an irreparable loss.
Each accident is a family falling into tragedy, a burden to society.
Therefore, we cannot be satisfied with the initial results. Traffic accidents must be reduced sustainably and stably, and the situation of "reducing this month, increasing next month" cannot be avoided.
To achieve sustainable results, it is necessary to do three things well.
First, continue to maintain strict, public, and transparent inspection and handling.
The law only truly becomes effective when it is implemented regularly, without exceptions, without "vacant areas" of time or area.
Second, promote traffic law education right from school.
Forming traffic culture must start early, so that each student understands that complying with the law is not only to avoid being fined, but also to protect themselves and the community.
Third, strengthen communication and mobilization so that each citizen is clearly aware of the consequences of violations.
When self-awareness becomes the main driving force, accidents will decrease more naturally and sustainably than any administrative measure.
A safe society is not only measured by the numbers of declines in each peak period, but by the daily peace on each road.
Traffic accidents have decreased sharply, which is a welcome sign. But the ultimate goal must be to reduce them to the lowest possible level, towards no more unjust deaths on the road.
