On November 1, the People's Committee of Giang Thanh district (Kien Giang) provided information on the progress of overcoming subsidence and landslides of the Ha Giang canal embankment project.
According to the District People's Committee, the embankment project was completed and put into use for a while, but on August 4, 2024, landslides occurred in 3 segments A35, A36, A37.
After the incident occurred, the District People's Committee directed the District Construction Investment Project Management Board, construction units, supervision units, and design consultants to inspect and survey the site. At the same time, the District People's Committee organized meetings to propose solutions to complete the work as soon as possible.
The district also assigned the District Construction Investment Project Management Board to directly monitor the progress of the repair. However, the progress of the repair is still slower than expected and the contractor's commitment due to the weather, construction during the rain and storm, which somewhat affected the progress.
Up to now, the troubleshooting of the above 3 segments has completed the following items: piling, construction and installation of formwork reinforcement, pouring concrete for the bottom slab of the 3 segments. The construction unit is preparing for the construction of the remaining items such as pouring concrete for the embankment wall; filling soil behind the embankment; completing sidewalks, trees, internal roads, curbs and railings. The lighting system at these 3 segments is expected to be completed by November 30, 2024.
The contractor is currently constructing the subsidence brick paving on the embankment (natural subsidence), the volume has reached 70%, the rest will be completed as soon as possible.
The District People's Committee also said that it has directed the District Construction Investment Project Management Board to regularly monitor the progress and quality of the project and require supervision consultants to be present regularly at the project during the remediation process, promptly report problems occurring on the project and take responsibility for their duties.
The contractor must speed up the work of fixing the problems in the above 3 segments and the natural subsidence locations, creating a green, clean and flat embankment landscape as soon as possible during the warranty period, but must ensure the quality of the project according to regulations.
As previously reported, the Ha Giang canal embankment is more than 3km long. After the incident, representatives of the investor, construction unit, and supervisory unit recorded the scene, warned of danger, and erected barriers. At the same time, machinery and workers also unloaded soil at 3 sections at risk of landslides to reduce the load, conduct geological surveys, and propose solutions to fix and stabilize the entire embankment.
The embankment project has an investment of 80 billion VND. The embankment project with auxiliary systems such as sidewalks, trees, drainage systems, lighting... will be completed in 18 months and will be accepted and put into use from March 11, 2024.
However, in July 2024, the embankment showed signs of subsidence of pavement tiles. By August 2024, a nearly 70m long embankment section had seriously eroded, causing concern among residents.
