The Dong Dang - Tra Linh Expressway with a length of 121 km has a total investment of nearly VND23,000 billion, passing through the two provinces of Lang Son and Cao Bang, and is divided into investment phases. Cao Bang province is the competent state agency in the project.
Phase 1 of the project is more than 93km long, including 2 mountain tunnels and 64 overpasses across the Ky Cung and Bang Giang rivers and many streams and provincial roads.
With the goal of opening the route in December 2025, the entire project is aiming to complete 10 million m3 of excavated soil and 7 million m3 of fill soil.

However, the prolonged rain and geological conditions in the area and the requirements for parallel implementation of some work in phase 2 put great pressure on the construction units.
Mr. Dang Tien Thang - General Director of Dong Dang - Tra Linh Expressway Joint Stock Company - said: "The weather has been continuously raining for 3 months, so taking advantage of the sunny days, all construction units have accelerated the work speed to make up for the progress".
It is known that at the construction site, the project enterprise and contractors are mobilizing more than 3,200 personnel along with 1,456 machines and equipment, deploying over 287 construction teams.
As of August 2025, the construction output reached 3,525/10,628 billion VND, equivalent to about 33.2% of the contract value, equivalent to 50% of the route clearance output in 2025.
Contractors reset the construction progress, increase the number of human resources, equipment and construction teams compared to the original plan, all with the goal of opening the technical route as committed.
Along with investors, Cao Bang province is also actively preparing for the next steps in the project. In addition to continuing to propagate for 7 households on the route to relocate and hand over the construction site, the locality is preparing to complete the plan to start construction in phase 2.
On August 7, speaking with reporters, a representative of the People's Committee of Cao Bang province said that the locality is carefully preparing to start construction of phase 2 of the Dong Dang - Tra Linh expressway project on August 19.
Along with the Dong Dang - Tra Linh project, Cao Bang province is also busy implementing procedures related to the project to build the expressway connecting Bac Kan (now Thai Nguyen) - Cao Bang.
"With the Bac Kan - Cao Bang project, the province is continuing to complete the pre-feasibility study report to submit to the competent authorities" - a representative of the People's Committee of Cao Bang province shared.

Previously, the People's Committee of Cao Bang province submitted a document to the Prime Minister, proposing to be the investment management agency for the Bac Kan - Cao Bang Expressway Project. The project is about 87.3 km long, of which 58.75 km passes through Bac Kan and 28.55 km passes through Cao Bang province. The route starts from Bac Kan city (now in Bac Kan ward, Thai Nguyen province), ends in Cao Bang city (now Thuc Phan ward) and has branch routes connecting to Vo Nguyen Giap street and National Highway 3.
The expressway is designed with 4 lanes, speed of 80 km/h according to TCVN 5729:2012 standards, road surface is 20.5 m wide. The entire route has many large items such as bridges, tunnels and intersections.
The total estimated investment is about VND 29,893 billion, of which the section through Cao Bang is about VND 11,357 billion, the section through Bac Kan is about VND 18,536 billion.
Immediately after being assigned as the project's investment management agency, Cao Bang province is actively preparing steps to soon start the expressway project that plays a continuous traffic axis to serve regional development.
