On November 3, the Ho Chi Minh City Urban Railway Management Board (MAUR) held a launching ceremony for a 60-day and night peak emulation movement to accelerate the completion of key tasks of the Metro Line 2 construction project, welcoming the 14th National Congress of the Party.
The emulation movement takes place from November 1 to December 31, 2025, aiming to promote the spirit of initiative and creativity, overcoming difficulties to complete project adjustment procedures, select EPC contractors, consult supervision, project management and move towards starting construction in 2025.
The Metro No. 2 project was first approved by the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee in October 2010 with a total investment of more than VND 26,000 billion (equivalent to 1.37 billion USD).
By November 2019, the total investment capital was adjusted to more than VND47,800 billion (about 2.09 billion USD), mostly ODA loans.
However, by the end of 2024, the city will shift the use of budget capital for implementation, in order to proactively increase resources and speed up project progress. This is also the first project to apply a special mechanism, especially according to Resolution 188/2025/QH15 of the National Assembly.
Metro Line 2 has a total length of more than 11 km, of which 9 km is underground, nearly 2 km is elevated, including 10 stations (9 underground stations, 1 elevated station) and a Tham Luong depot.
The route passes through the previous 6 districts: 1, 3, 10, 12, Tan Binh and Tan Phu, connecting the city center with the Northwest region.
According to MAUR, Metro Line 2 project has a total land acquisition area of more than 251,000 m2, affecting 585 cases. Up to now, the entire site has been 100% handed over to the investor.
The relocation of technical infrastructure (electricity, water supply and drainage, telecommunications, trees, etc.) has been implemented simultaneously since the end of March 2024 and has reached about 61% of the volume, expected to be completed by the end of 2025.
In 8 main construction packages, CP1 package - construction of office buildings and auxiliary works at Tham Luong depot has been completed and put into use.
The remaining seven packages are being updated in documents and reviewed procedures before selecting an EPC contractor.
If started at the end of 2025, Metro Line 2 will be constructed in the 2026 - 2030 period and warranty and repair of defects in the 2031 - 2032 period.
When completed, Metro Line 2 will be the backbone of traffic connecting the city center with the Northwest region, helping to reduce the load on major routes such as Cach Mang Thang Tam, Truong Chinh, Cong Hoa..., while promoting urban development according to the TOD model - urban development associated with public transport.
