On National Highway 13 (section from Binh Trieu bridge to Vinh Binh bridge), many front houses have retreated 15-30m deep. After receiving compensation money, people urgently repaired the remaining houses to stabilize their lives and continue doing business.
According to Hiep Binh Ward People's Committee, from now until July 30, units will continue to receive and hand over land for about 150 cases (95%) and complete 100% of site clearance work before July 31 according to the direction of Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee.
After completing site clearance, the project is expected to start construction at the end of 2026 and be completed in 2028. The project to upgrade and expand National Highway 13 is nearly 6km long, with a total capital of nearly 21,000 billion VND under the BOT (build - operate - transfer) contract. The road will be expanded to 60m, building an elevated line of 3.55km with 4 lanes and a parallel road system of 8-10 lanes. The project also includes 10 intersections, including underpasses in Binh Loi and Binh Phuoc areas to reduce congestion.
On National Highway 22, the section passing through Xuan Thoi Son commune, many frontage houses have also been dismantled. According to the Xuan Thoi Son commune Construction Investment Project Management Board, the component project of compensation, support, resettlement and infrastructure relocation has 987 affected cases. To date, 565 cases have received money and handed over land, of which 256 cases have completed house dismantling.
The project to upgrade National Highway 22, about 8km long, from An Suong intersection to Ring Road 3, will be expanded to 60m with 10 lanes and build 7 overpasses at major intersections. The project has a total capital of about 10,424 billion VND under the BOT contract, expected to start construction at the end of 2026 and be completed in 2028.
At the western gateway of the city, many houses and shops along National Highway 1 are also being dismantled to serve the project to expand the road from 6 to 10-12 lanes, combined with building overpasses and organizing grade-separated traffic.
The National Highway 1 expansion project has a total investment of about 16,285 billion VND in BOT form, of which compensation, support and resettlement costs are about 9,600 billion VND. The project affects about 2,240 households, with more than 1,800 households having to be completely cleared.
When completed in 2028, the road will strengthen the connection between Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta provinces.
According to Dr. Tran Quang Thang - Director of the Institute of Economics and Management of Ho Chi Minh City, National Highway 1, National Highway 13 and National Highway 22 are not only urban roads but also national transport corridors, carrying a large number of container trucks, trucks, inter-provincial passenger cars and personal vehicles every day. According to Mr. Thang, the positive signal is that the city is gradually removing the biggest "bottleneck" of site clearance. When the projects are completed, along with Ring Road 3, Ring Road 4 and the expressway network, the traffic capacity of the entire system will be significantly improved.
From the perspective of planning, Dr. Vo Kim Cuong - former Deputy Chief Architect of Ho Chi Minh City - believes that the significance of National Highway 1, National Highway 13 and National Highway 22 are strategic connecting axes between Ho Chi Minh City and the southern key economic region. When upgraded synchronously and connected with ring roads, expressways, seaports and urban transport networks, the entire system will operate more efficiently, creating long-term development space for the city.
