Ho Chi Minh City is about to expand the highway leading to the West to 8 lanes

MINH QUÂN |

Ho Chi Minh City plans to spend about VND2,350 billion to expand the 12.6km Ho Chi Minh City - Trung Luong expressway from 6 to 8 lanes.

This project has just been assigned by Vice Chairman of Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee Bui Xuan Cuong to the Department of Transport (GTVT) to preside over, coordinate with relevant agencies to research and prepare investment proposal documents.

Ho Chi Minh City leaders emphasized that the expansion must be carried out synchronously with related projects to maximize investment efficiency.

According to the plan, the Department of Planning and Investment of Ho Chi Minh City will be responsible for reviewing, advising, proposing tasks and allocating capital to the Department of Transport in 2024 to implement the project dossier. The deadline for submitting the plan to the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee is before October 31.

Previously, the HCMC Department of Transport proposed to expand the HCMC - Trung Luong Expressway by 12.6km. Of which, the Tan Tao - Cho Dem section is 9.5km long and the Binh Thuan - Cho Dem section is 3.1km long, both of which will be expanded from 6 to 8 lanes.

Three overpasses will also be built on this route at Tran Dai Nghia, Tran Van Giau and Bui Thanh Khiet streets.

The total investment of the project is estimated at about 2,350 billion VND, of which the Ho Chi Minh City budget accounts for 50% (about 1,175 billion VND), the rest will be proposed for Central support.

According to the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport, expanding the two sections of the Ho Chi Minh City - Trung Luong Expressway will be convenient because there is no need to clear the land. The project is proposed to be implemented from 2024 and completed in 2028.

The expansion of this access road is in sync with the project to upgrade the Ho Chi Minh City - Trung Luong - My Thuan expressway, a vital traffic route connecting Ho Chi Minh City with the Mekong Delta.

This project is currently being completed by investors for a pre-feasibility study report.

According to the plan, the Ho Chi Minh City - Trung Luong - My Thuan expressway will be expanded along the entire length of 91km. Of which, the Ho Chi Minh City - Trung Luong section will be upgraded to 8 lanes, with 2 emergency lanes; and the Trung Luong - My Thuan section will be expanded to 6 lanes, with 2 emergency lanes.

The project also includes the construction of intersections, bridges, culverts, toll collection systems and intelligent transportation.

The total investment for this highway expansion project is nearly 32,300 billion VND, implemented under the BOT (build - operate - transfer) form, without using the state budget. The project is expected to be implemented in the 2024 - 2028 period.

The Ho Chi Minh City - Trung Luong and Trung Luong - My Thuan Expressways are vital routes, helping to shorten travel time from Ho Chi Minh City to My Thuan to only about 1 hour and 45 minutes, instead of more than 3 hours as when traveling on National Highway 1.
