Ho Chi Minh City - Xuan Son commune implements the destruction of infected pig herds, requesting farmers to strengthen the prevention and control of African swine fever.

On September 15, Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Station Area 8 (Sub-Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine of Ho Chi Minh City) coordinated with the Economic Department and the Commune Service Supply Center to organize the destruction of 12 remaining pigs of a farming household in the area, when test results were positive for African swine fever.

Previously, the above livestock household (Son Lap hamlet) had a total herd of 23 pigs including 11 fattening pigs and 12 piglets. From September 11, the pig herd appeared in a state of starvation and sporadic death. Records show that on September 11, 3 pigs died, on September 12, 5 pigs died and on September 13, 3 pigs died.

Being informed by the farming household about abnormal signs in the pig herd, functional forces took samples for testing according to regulations. In the afternoon of September 14, the test result was positive for African swine fever.

Therefore, functional forces have proceeded to destroy the remaining pigs according to regulations; at the same time, implementing measures to zone off, control epidemics, sanitize, disinfect, and sterilize the livestock area to limit the risk of disease outbreaks and spread.

Previously, Xuan Son commune also coordinated with functional forces of Ho Chi Minh City to organize the destruction of a herd of 62 pigs of a farming household in Tan Xuan hamlet due to African swine fever on August 22.

According to Xuan Son Commune People's Committee, in 2026, the locality recorded 23 African swine fever outbreaks, and all quickly proceeded to handle them according to regulations.

The locality also requested farmers not to be subjective, to proactively monitor the health of pigs and strictly implement biosafety farming measures.

At the same time, strictly implement the "5 no's" principle, including: not hiding the epidemic; not buying, selling, transporting sick pigs, dead pigs; not slaughtering, consuming sick pigs; not throwing dead pig carcasses into the environment; not feeding pigs leftover food that has not been cooked.

In particular, people should absolutely not sell off sick pigs and suspected sick pigs because this behavior can spread the epidemic to other farming households, causing difficulties for zoning and epidemic control.

In case of suspected epidemics, farmers need to immediately report to local authorities to coordinate in taking samples for testing, zoning and handling according to the guidance of specialized agencies. At the same time, fully and truthfully declare the number of pigs raised, the epidemic situation to serve epidemic prevention and control and implement support policies when conditions are met.

The proactiveness of farmers, along with honest declaration, early detection and timely coordination of handling, will contribute to controlling and extinguishing African swine fever outbreaks, protecting livestock herds, limiting economic damage and ensuring environmental safety in Xuan Son commune.
