Operation of salinity prevention and storage of fresh water over 500 billion VND in Soc Trang

Soc Trang - The operation of the Rach mop boat lock will prevent salinity and store fresh water for more than 36,700 hectares of agricultural production in the two provinces of Soc Trang and Hau Giang.

On February 17, the Management Board of Investment and Construction of Irrigation 10 (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development) organized an inspection of the project implementation and temporary operation of the Rach mop culvert under the Southern Hau River Water Resources Control Project in Soc Trang province.

Attending were Mr. Nguyen Hoang Hiep - Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development; Mr. Tran Van Lau - Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee, Chairman of the People's Committee of Soc Trang province.

Mr. Kieu Van Cong - Deputy Director of the 10 Irrigation Investment and Construction Management Board said that the investor and contractor have made efforts to simultaneously deploy construction of items; increased shifts to complete the installation of mechanical vents, hydraulic cylinders, ensure the conditions for operation of the project, serve the work of preventing and fighting drought and salinity, serve production and people's lives in the dry season of 2024-2025. To date, the project has reached 92.16% of the volume and is expected to be completed and handed over for use before April 30.

Chairman of Soc Trang Provincial People's Committee Tran Van Lau proposed that the 10 Irrigation Investment and Construction Management Board speed up the construction progress, complete the Rach mop culvert soon and temporarily hand it over to the province for operation to serve the work of preventing salinity in the 2024 - 2025 dry season; support the province in temporary operation when the salinity in front of the culvert is >2g/liter to serve the urgent need to prevent salinity from entering deep into the fields.

The leaders of the People's Committee of Soc Trang province recommended that the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development soon allocate capital to clear the site and construct the remaining 5 culverts (Muong Khai 2 culverts, Tra much culverts, Cai Trung culverts, Cau Truong culverts, Tra Quyt culverts) under the Nam Song Hau water source control project. At the same time, it is proposed to prioritize investment in an anti-landslide embankment on the Rach mop riverbank, Song Phung commune, Long Phu district with a budget of about 100 billion VND, investment in an anti-landslide embankment on the riverbank in Phung An hamlet, An My commune, Ke Sach district with a budget of about 100 billion VND and prioritize the implementation of Dai Ngai culvert and My Xuyen culvert.

Speaking at the temporary operation of Rach mop culvert, Deputy Minister Nguyen Hoang Hiep emphasized the importance of the project in controlling salinity, keeping sweetness, creating stable and sustainable production conditions for the natural area of 19,220 hectares in Ke Sach, Chau Thanh, Long Phu districts and Soc Trang city.

The Deputy Minister also said that the remaining 5 culverts are expected to be constructed in the early second quarter of 2025. After completion, it will help minimize the impact caused by drought and salinity, support the supply of fresh water to cope with high salinity waves on the Hau River for a natural area of 36,710 hectares in Ke Sach and Chau Thanh districts (Soc Trang province), Chau Thanh district and Nga Bay town (Hau Giang province).
