On December 16, Mr. Nguyen Quoc Doan - Deputy Inspector General of the Government Inspectorate - and the working delegation inspected the situation and worked in Long Hai commune (HCMC) on the work of combating illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU).
Long Hai is one of the areas with the largest fishing fleet in Ho Chi Minh City today. During the inspection, the team went to fishing ports, wharves, anchorages and the homes of some boat owners to learn about the management of fishing vessels, comply with regulations on licenses, journey monitoring equipment, etc.
Currently, the whole Long Hai commune has 1,215 fishing vessels, of which more than 880 are operating in offshore areas. Some fishing vessels that are not qualified to operate have been required to anchor at shore, assign forces to monitor and update images periodically to ensure they do not go to sea.
The locality also organizes many flexible IUU propaganda models, close to fishermen such as "Bright breakfast with fishermen", "Bright coffee with fishermen" to help grasp the concerns and difficulties of the people, while disseminating related legal regulations.
Mr. Nguyen Quoc Doan commented that the working trip aims to survey and comprehensively assess the current situation of combating IUU fishing at the grassroots level, thereby agreeing on solutions to overcome existing problems and limitations.
At the same time, it is recommended that localities continue to strictly manage the fleet, especially for vehicles that are not qualified to operate. Continue to promote propaganda and dissemination of legal regulations on fisheries exploitation to each ship owner, captain and fisherman. Thereby, raising awareness of compliance and preventing IUU violations from the root.
According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Ho Chi Minh City, by December 2025, the locality has completed 19/19 key tasks under the direction of the Government; 100% of fishing vessels are registered and have updated all data; 100% of fishing vessels with a length of 15 m or more are equipped with journey monitoring equipment. Ship that are not qualified to operate are cordoned off, anchored and controlled tightly, absolutely not allowed to go to sea.
Ho Chi Minh City is focusing on allocating resources, drastically implementing measures to combat IUU fishing, linking fleet management with the development and approval of projects to change jobs and livelihoods for fishermen in a sustainable direction.
The work of controlling fishing vessels entering and leaving the port, monitoring exploitation output and tracing the origin of aquatic products has been strictly implemented, contributing to raising fishermen's awareness of law compliance and gradually preventing IUU violations from the origin.
