Checking at the farm
After a period of suspension to handle environmental pollution, in mid-March 2025, Agri-Vina Agricultural Investment Joint Stock Company (Agri-Vina Company) was allowed by the People's Committee of Thanh Hoa province to put pigs into trial farming at the farm, with the farming quantity being about 50% of the designed capacity. By May 2025, the company is allowed to gradually increase the pigs to 100% capacity, equivalent to 30,000 pigs.
However, in early June 2025, the old Lang Chanh town and Tan Phuc commune continued to have foul odors, causing people to be upset and report to the local government and functional agencies.
During the inspection, the Thanh Hoa Department of Agriculture and Environment determined that the farm is raising a scale of 21,000 pigs (reaching 70% of capacity). At the time of inspection (late June 2025), the inspection team found that due to the smell spreading into the environment, there was no clear feeling, so the team agreed not to take samples and would take samples if they received feedback from people at the time of the smell (in the evening and early morning).
For Agri-Vina Company, the unit has fully invested in installing 39/39 odor and emission treatment systems behind each row of barns. The cause of the return of odor is determined to be due to low electrical power outages, some power outages causing the odor treatment system to be temporarily suspended or not reaching the designed capacity, leading to the odor spreading out.
Request to reduce livestock
Faced with the above situation, the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Thanh Hoa province has requested Agri-Vina Company to review and detect areas that may generate untreated odors, discharge them into the environment (such as biogas ponds, fertilizer mines, fertilizer sinks), install additional sprayers for deodorizing micro-usei products at fertilizer mines and fertilizer sinks; coordinate with consulting units to evaluate the overall efficiency of the system's odor treatment to have a renovation plan, especially the system's operating procedures, chemical dosage, pumping flow to effectively treat odors, not allowing waste chemicals to be discharged into the environment.
The company must reduce the density of farming in cages, move pigs from used cages to unused cages to reduce emissions, increase the efficiency of each cage's odor treatment and implement measures to reduce odor; urgently install a generator using biogas gas to recover and reduce excess emissions, not burning direct emissions.
Do not bring new pigs to the farm during the hot summer (from June to September), gradually reduce the number of pigs in the barns; by July 15, 2025, the total herd must not exceed 50% of the designed capacity. Only increase the herd after evaluating the handling effectiveness and having a report on the remedial results sent to the Thanh Hoa Department of Agriculture and Environment for inspection.
Previously, in early 2024, Agri-Vina Company put pigs into trial farming. After a short time, this farm spread a strong stench, causing strong reactions from the people here.
By July 2024, the People's Committee of Thanh Hoa province had suspended the farm to fix the problem. After many months of adjustment, the company allowed pig farming to return but continued to have odor pollution, causing people to be upset.
