According to Nikkei Asia, although more than 10.2 million vehicles were sold in the past year (including Lexus), only 145,000 of them were electric vehicles, accounting for just over 1%. This is a modest number compared to the ambition that Toyota is pursuing.
In an interview after the 2025 financial report, Toyota Chairman - Mr. Koji Sato said that the company is re-evaluating market demand for each region and will adjust the electric vehicle strategy based on reality. Toyota's upcoming direction includes introducing 10 new electric vehicle models from now until 2027, focusing on key markets such as Europe and North America.
Notably, Toyota will start producing the first 3-row electric SUV in the US from 2026, to strengthen its position in this market. Meanwhile, in China - the world's largest electric vehicle market, the company has launched the bZ3X model with a price of only about 15,000 USD, showing its efforts to regain market share.
In addition, models such as the Urban Cruiser, C-HR+, and the upgraded bZ4X are also expected to help Toyota increase competitiveness with strong competitors such as Tesla and other electric car brands. The bZ4X model has achieved positive results in Norway, one of the most developed electric vehicle markets.
Toyota's future in the electric vehicle sector remains uncertain, but new moves show that the company is serious about this conversion strategy. By expanding its product portfolio, investing in production in key markets and striving to meet the diverse needs of global consumers, Toyota is gradually reshaping its position in the zero-emission car era.
