Volvo has officially revealed the electric version of the sedan S90 series, called the ES90. This is also the first Volvo model to apply the 800V electric architecture.
Using 800V technology, ES90 is supported for DC fast charging. According to Volvo, the ES90 can increase its range by 300 km with just 10 minutes of 350 kW charging. In addition, with new battery management software and hardware, the ES90 has an operating range of up to 700 km with a fully charged battery according to WLTP (global standard, designed to accurately measure fuel consumption).
If charging according to CLTC standard (the standard used to test the performance and fuel consumption of electric vehicles), the operating range of the ES90 is 740 km for 4-wheel drive variants with 2 electric motors and a 106 kWh battery pack.
Volvo added that its 800V powertrain includes lighter electric motors and other components to reduce the overall weight of the vehicle. Thanks to that, the car's acceleration and range are improved. The new management software also helps reduce ES90 charging time by 10-80% in just 20 minutes.
The design of the ES90 is inherited from the S90, adding LED lights to the sides of the rear window and the main taillights in the traditional position. The ceiling of the vehicle uses glass, hidden door handles and Li dar mounted on top. The front of the car will be similar to the EX90 model with the typical LED headlights of Volvo.
The system supports AI-powered active safety features and sensors. The ES90 is equipped with LiDAR with 5 radars, 8 cameras and 12 ultrasound sensors. In addition to the ES90 electric version, Volvo is researching an upgraded version for the S90 internal combustion engine - one of the 5 new products planned for 2025. According to the plan, the Volvo ES90 model will be launched globally on March 5, 2025.
