According to Motorcycles Data (MD) data, Vietnam consumed about 1.86 million two-wheeled vehicles in the first 7 months of 2026, an increase of 19.6% compared to the same period in 2025. In which, electric motorcycle sales reached 513,742 units, an increase of 97.2%. The proportion of electric motorcycles in the total number of two-wheeled vehicles statistically increased from 16.8% to 27.6%.
These figures show that electric motorbike sales increased faster than the general increase of the market in the same period. However, MD is an independent market data source, not a state management agency, so the above figures need to be understood within the scope of this unit's statistical method.
Electric motorbikes increase but it is not yet possible to say they are replacing gasoline vehicles
Another statistic from the Vietnam Association of Motorcycle Manufacturers (VAMM) said that 5 members including Honda Vietnam, Yamaha Motor Vietnam, Piaggio Vietnam, Suzuki Vietnam and SYM Vietnam sold 638,431 vehicles in the second quarter of 2026, an increase of 4.4% compared to the same period last year.
VAMM notes that the above data only reflects sales of 5 members, not representing the entire Vietnamese motorcycle market. Due to the different statistical scope of VAMM and MD, the two sources cannot be added or directly compared to determine the total market sales.
Therefore, existing data is not sufficient to confirm that electric motorbikes are replacing motorbikes using internal combustion engines. It can be noted that electric motorbikes are accounting for a larger proportion in MD statistics, while traditional motorbikes still maintain significant consumption according to VAMM data.
Buyers have more criteria to consider
Product diversity, selling price and usage needs may be factors that consumers consider when choosing electric motorbikes. For people who mainly travel in urban areas, usage costs, operating distance and charging capacity may be of concern.
Meanwhile, people who travel frequently may pay attention to charging time, travel distance and access to the charging point or battery replacement, depending on the car model. Maintenance, repair and component services are also factors that need to be considered during use.
With the growth recorded in the first 7 months of the year, electric motorbikes are becoming a noteworthy part of the two-wheeled vehicle market. However, to assess the long-term trend, it is necessary to continue to monitor sales in the remaining months and the following years.
