First appearance of dysentery
According to information from the Dien Bien District Medical Center, Dien Bien Province, from December 6 to now, the district has recorded 34 cases of dysentery. Of which, the cases are concentrated in students in the flash flood area of Muong Pon commune.
Muong Pon Secondary School has a total of 638 students, 394 of whom are boarding students. Currently, the school is strictly isolating and providing medical care for students with dysentery. Disease prevention measures such as disinfection and separation of activities (separate bathing, separate eating, separate toileting) are also strictly implemented.
Currently being treated in the isolation room of Muong Pon Secondary School, Thao Thi Hoa, a 9th grade student, still feels tired after severe stomach pain. Hoa said: “Since I got sick (December 12) until now, I have had a lot of diarrhea, fever and feel tired. After 2 days of treatment, thanks to the care of teachers and doctors, my health has gradually stabilized.”
On the afternoon of December 14, speaking with a reporter from Lao Dong Newspaper, Doctor Quang Thi Dung - Deputy Head of the Muong Pon Commune Health Station - said: "Up to now, there are a total of 30 cases of dysentery in Muong Pon Commune, of which 8 cases have been transferred to the District Health Center, 13 cases are currently isolated, treated and monitored at school. Students receiving medical care at school can return to school in the next few days."
According to Dr. Dung, to prevent the disease from spreading, units have increased propaganda about personal hygiene, especially in student dormitories. This is the first time that an outbreak of dysentery has been recorded in Muong Pon commune.
Disinfect the entire school
As soon as the first case of dysentery was detected at the school, Muong Pon Commune Health Station conducted an investigation, isolated the area and determined the cause. Afterwards, Dien Bien District Health Center sent a team of doctors and nurses to the facility to directly treat the patients. At the same time, they deployed disinfection spraying at the entire Muong Pon Commune Secondary School and 5 schools in the area.
Currently, Dien Bien District Medical Center is maintaining a mobile medical team to prevent and control dysentery in Muong Pon commune to provide professional support to admit and treat patients with dysentery. The medical team is on duty 24/7, ready to receive, provide first aid, treat and care for patients.
In addition, the commune health station has also prepared a quarantine area in Linh village. This area will be used if the number of students with dysentery continues to increase. In addition, if more cases of the disease are detected in the community, a separate quarantine area will be set up.
Speaking to Lao Dong Newspaper, Doctor Vu Hong Vuong - Deputy Head of the Department of Infectious Diseases, Dien Bien District Medical Center - said: "Patients with bacillary dysentery often have symptoms such as abdominal pain, fatigue, loss of appetite and diarrhea. These symptoms usually appear within 1-3 days after infection and patients can recover after 5-7 days."
Bacillary dysentery (also known as bacillary dysentery) is an acute intestinal infection caused by Shigella bacteria. The disease is transmitted mainly through the fecal-oral route, from sick people to healthy people directly through contact, or indirectly through contaminated food and drinking water. The disease often occurs in some areas lacking clean water, poor environmental sanitation, and poor personal hygiene; it is easy to spread into an epidemic in the community.
