On March 19, Hue Central Hospital informed that doctors from the Intensive Care - Pediatric Emergency Department saved the life of patient N.N.A.N (7 years old, residing in Mo Duc, Quang Ngai) with acute myocarditis, severe arrhythmia, and critical heart shock using the technique of oxylizing blood through the body's peritoneum (VA-ECMO) and placing a permanent created medium.
This is the youngest patient (17kg) and the 6th case to successfully undergo VA-ECMO at the Pediatric Center, Hue Central Hospital.
Children were hospitalized with symptoms of fatigue and slow heart rate. After a few hours, the child's blood pressure suddenly dropped, his limbs were cold, and it quickly progressed to a heart attack.
Through testing, doctors determined that the child had severe arrhythmia, severe damage to the heart muscle, and a high risk of death.
Under the direction of Prof. Dr. Pham Nhu Hiep - Director of Hue Central Hospital, doctors held an emergency consultation and decided to place VA-ECMO to support the heart that night.
After 5 days of ECMO, the child's heart gradually recovered but still had severe arrhythmia (Blocking second-third level 3), and needed to continue placing a permanent centrifuge.
After more than 2 weeks of treatment, the child has miraculously recovered, can walk normally, has stable heart function and is expected to be discharged from the hospital on March 20.
Extreme myocarditis is a dangerous disease, with a mortality rate of nearly 100% before ECMO. According to Prof. Dr. Pham Nhu Hiep, Hue Central Hospital has implemented ECMO since 2009 and has saved many patients with heart shock, myocarditis, and acute respiratory failure.
VA-ECMO supports the heart and lungs, giving critical patients a chance to survive when conventional treatments are ineffective. This technique has now been routine at the Pediatric Center, contributing to improving the quality of treatment for severe pediatric patients at Hue Central Hospital, emphasized Prof. Dr. Pham Nhu Hiep.
