Calling for blood donation from many sources
According to Dr. Ho Hoang Thi Kim Hue - Head of the Department of Biochemistry - Hematology - Blood Transfusion, Vietnam - Cuba Dong Hoi Friendship Hospital (HNVN-CBDH), normally, the peak demand after Tet ranges from 600-700 units of blood. However, currently, the hospital's blood bank has only 150 units, while all blood types are scarce, especially group A.
The main reason for this situation is the prolonged Tet holiday, making it difficult to mobilize blood donation sources. Meanwhile, the demand for blood transfusion for emergency care, treatment of blood diseases, surgery... is still increasing. In addition, the mentality of being discouraged from "blooding" at the beginning of the year also makes many people hesitate to donate blood.
In recent days, fanpages of HNVN-CBDH Hospital and the Quang Binh Youth Voluntary Blood Donation Club have continuously issued announcements calling for blood donation.
In order to ensure a reserve blood supply, the hospital is implementing a plan to " blood exchange" between patients' relatives. If the family does not have a blood type suitable for the patient, they can donate blood from another group to replace the appropriate group from other blood donors.
Ms. Truong Thi Thu Dong (Ba Don town) shared: "My brother is being treated at the hospital and had to undergo surgery for nearly 5 hours, so he needs a lot of blood transfusion. He has blood type A, but I have blood type O+. Fortunately, the hospital is flexible, as long as it meets health requirements, it is a blood donation and there will be a transition between patients' families".
"White Blouse - pink Heart" Festival
In order to supplement the shortage of blood, from February 12-14, HNVN-CBDH Hospital organized a voluntary blood donation program "White Blouse - pink Heart". The program attracted a large number of hospital staff, medical staff, and youth union members to participate in blood donation. In particular, many families of medical staff also enthusiastically responded.
Ms. Dinh Thi Thuy Nga - a nurse in the Emergency Department - shared: "For medical staff, donating blood to save lives is a very normal act. If the patient needs it, even at midnight, I am willing to donate when I am healthy enough."
The hospital also received support from the armed forces, voluntary blood donation clubs and many other individuals. It is expected that from February 10-15, the hospital will be able to mobilize about 150 units of blood to supplement the reserve. However, this is only a temporary solution, and the shortage of blood supply cannot be completely resolved.
Doctor Ho Hoang Thi Kim Hue expressed her hope that organizations and individuals will continue to join hands to support the hospital's blood bank.
"I hope that if the community is healthy enough, they can go to the hospital to donate blood to help patients who need a blood transfusion," said Dr. Hue.
Dr. Tran Anh Duong - Chairman of the Trade Union of HNV-CBDH Hospitals - emphasized: "The "White Blouse - pink Heart" festival is an annual activity to encourage union members to donate blood voluntarily. In particular, after Tet is the time when there is a scarce source of blood, so donating blood at this time is even more meaningful. Each drop of blood donated not only saves the patient's life but also demonstrates the noble human spirit of the doctor".
Currently, the hospital continues to call on the community to participate in blood donation. People who are healthy enough and do not have infectious diseases can go to HNVN-CBDH Hospital to donate blood, contributing to helping patients who need urgent blood transfusion.
