Ho Chi Minh City speaks out about information about relocating Hanoi University of Science and Technology to develop real estate

Chân Phúc |

Ho Chi Minh City affirms that there is no policy to use the land of Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology - Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City for real estate.

In recent days, many information related to the relocation of the University of Science and Technology - Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City at 268 Ly Thuong Kiet (town center area) has appeared on some forums and social networks. Some opinions suggest that this relocation is to give up land funds for commercial real estate projects.

Before the above information, the functional agencies of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee have provided official information to clarify.

Accordingly, the policy of relocating the University of Science and Technology campus from the inner city to a university urban area is not a new problem. In the development process of Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City, there has been a direction to gradually focus training institutions on the National University urban area in order to form a large-scale and modern training and scientific research center.

However, in the previous period, implementation faced many difficulties due to land fund and infrastructure conditions not meeting requirements.

To date, in the National University of Ho Chi Minh City Urban Area, there is a land fund of nearly 40 hectares for the University of Science and Technology, and the university urban area infrastructure has been invested relatively synchronously. This is considered an important condition to continue researching the expansion and development of the school's training facilities in the coming time.

In addition, the study of relocating higher education institutions out of the inner city area is also in line with the city's new policy.

On February 25, 2026, the Standing Committee of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee issued a Conclusion on researching and developing a project to relocate and expand higher education institutions, colleges, vocational training and some medical facilities out of the inner city area.

The goal of this policy is to gradually reduce traffic and population pressure in the central area, limit congestion in areas with many training institutions, and at the same time reorganize the urban space in a reasonable, sustainable direction and develop large-scale, modern university urban areas.

According to functional agencies, the study of relocating the University of Science and Technology campus is a specific content in the general policy of the City Party Committee, not a separate decision for an educational institution.

Regarding the existing land area of Hanoi University of Science and Technology at 268 Ly Thuong Kiet, the city said that functional agencies have only been assigned the task of researching a plan to use it in accordance with planning and urban development needs.

Up to now, there has been no specific decision on the plan to use this land area, and there is also no policy to allocate the land area to any business to implement commercial real estate projects.

According to current regulations, the adjustment and reorganization of large-scale higher education institutions, especially units under the National University system, is under the authority to consider and decide of the Government and the Prime Minister.

Therefore, the agencies of Ho Chi Minh City are currently only considering the proposal of Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi University of Science and Technology on researching and developing a project. This process will be implemented in coordination with central ministries and branches before submitting it to competent authorities for consideration.

According to the assignment, the Department of Finance is presiding over and coordinating with Ho Chi Minh City National University and relevant departments and agencies to research and complete the project.

The city said that the process of developing the plan will ensure compliance with the approved plan, effective use of the land fund, and at the same time serve the common interests of the community and the sustainable development of Ho Chi Minh City.

Functional agencies also affirmed that they will continue to provide official information when specific options are studied and submitted to competent authorities for decision.
