This proposal was made after an internal meeting organized and led by Ignacio Alonso, President of the Uruguay Football Federation. This has attracted the attention of FIFA President Gianni Infantino.
Reuters recently quoted a FIFA spokesperson as saying: "A FIFA Council member has made a proposal, analyzing the 2030 World Cup, so 64 teams should be present to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the tournament. This idea is being considered because FIFA is responsible for analyzing any proposal from one of its council members."
Meanwhile, the New York Times said that others in the meeting were surprised and silent. This signals that the above proposal may face opposition. However, FIFA President Infantino said that this idea is interesting and needs to be analyzed more carefully by FIFA, study the feasibility and discuss the issue at a later meeting.

The 2030 World Cup is the 100th anniversary of this prestigious football tournament. For the first time in history, the world's biggest football tournament will be held in 6 countries on 3 continents: Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay (USA), Spain, Portugal ( Europe) and Morocco ( Africa).
If the proposal is approved, many teams in the world will have more opportunities to participate in the tournament, including the Vietnamese team.
However, although the decision to increase the number of teams could bring positive economic results to FIFA, this also raises concerns about the necessary competitiveness in major tournaments being reduced.
In 2026, the World Cup will be held in 3 countries: the US, Canada and Mexico. This is the first World Cup with 48 teams competing.
