Older workers find it difficult to find jobs
At 8:30 a.m. on February 12, we arrived at the Ho Chi Minh City Employment Service Center on Nguyen Cuu Van Street, Binh Thanh District, Ho Chi Minh City. At this time, more than a dozen people came to do unemployment registration procedures or monthly job notices to receive TCTN.
Mr. Luu Quang Hao - a former car paint artist at a company specializing in selling cars - said that in the past, when the company was doing well, his monthly salary was also 12.13 million VND. When the automobile market is fiercely competitive, the company's business is gradually sluggish, and his income has also decreased, earning only 6-7 million VND per month.
In August 2024, Mr. Hao quit his job and went out to work part-time with friends at the garage to repair cars, but it did not improve. After a few months, seeing that the situation was not optimistic, he quit his job immediately and registered for unemployment to receive TCTN.
" Partly because I am 50 years old, there are few places I want to receive them, partly because the car market is not bright, so I decided to quit my job, now I am running Grab to make a living, helping my family to ease the pressure," said Mr. Hao.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Tuyen, a patient care officer at a foreign company specializing in medical services, said that she worked from August 2023 to December 2024 when her staff was cut. In the past two months, she has actively found a job in some places but has not been able to.
"The salary I want is 20 million VND/month, but some other places only pay 13-14 million VND. Such an income level is not suitable for my ability and desire, so I decided to register for unemployment to receive TCTN while waiting to find a job," Ms. Tuyen shared.
In addition to those who registered for unemployment, many people also came to report the employment status during the period of receiving TCTN.
According to Mr. Nguyen Van Phuc - former employee of Asia Bank, he has worked at the bank for over 10 years and quit nearly a year ago. This is the 7th month he has announced his employment status to continue receiving TCTN.
Mr. Phuc shared: "Currently, banks are also recruiting few people; if there are recruitments, they mainly choose young people, so the right job opportunities for me are few. I am over 50 years old, so I want to find an easy job suitable for my age, not a job with a lot of pressure," said Mr. Phuc.
96 enterprises recruit 13,725 jobs
Ms. Nguyen Van Hanh Thuc - Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Employment Service Center - said that statistics from January 1 to January 31, 2025, the number of people registering to receive TCTN in Ho Chi Minh City was 5,463, down 4,351 records (equivalent to a decrease of 44%) compared to the same period in 2024.
According to Ms. Thuc, there will be 1 week of Lunar New Year holiday in January 2025, so the number of workers registering to receive TCTN is not surprising.
The employment situation in Ho Chi Minh City in early 2025 also had positive changes, which affected the reduction in the number of unemployment registrations.
Ms. Thuc added that like every year, after the Lunar New Year 2025, the recruitment demand of businesses will increase and there will be many preferential policies to attract human resources to meet production needs during the year.
Collected by the Ho Chi Minh City Employment Service Center through businesses registered for recruitment at the center and job exchanges organized and attended by the center, there are currently 96 businesses with recruitment needs after Tet with recruitment needs for 13,725 job positions, concentrated in the unskilled labor group (41.03%), services (7.89%), food - beverages (6.23%), footwear - garment (5.25%), engineering - mechanics (4.61%) and other industries.
To continue to strengthen job connectivity after Tet, we have provided consultation and introduced jobs to workers at bus stations and terminals in Ho Chi Minh City. At the same time, propagate to workers about job consultation and introduction addresses that are deployed daily at the center's unemployment insurance settlement points, in order to limit fraud through the form of job brokerage from units that are not licensed to operate job services," said Ms. Thuc.
