Studying all your life to dare to think, dare to speak, dare to do
Among the 95 outstanding workers who were recently honored and commended by the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor is Mr. Nguyen Van Bang - Head of the Water Minister Component Maintenance and Assembly Team of Thanh Hoa Water Supply Joint Stock Company. During his 20 years with the company, Mr. Bang has been evaluated by his superiors and colleagues as always dedicated to his work, not afraid of difficulties and hardships. In particular, he regularly explores and gives initiatives to help businesses save costs and improve production efficiency.
Talking to Lao Dong, Mr. Nguyen Van Bang shared: "20 years ago, at the age of twenty, when I started working as a worker at Thanh Hoa Water Supply Joint Stock Company, I set a goal: "Do your best, because labor is glory". I try to learn every day, learn from colleagues, from books and newspapers, from technological devices such as phones, computers... Only then can I help myself supplement knowledge, experience and find scientific and highly effective working methods".
From learning, Mr. Bang has had initiatives that have benefited the company by billions of dong, such as the initiative "Building a water meter removal system using compressed air" to help reduce labor, shorten working time and save more than 550 million VND/year. Or the initiative "Disealing and manufacturing a system of water meter cluster removal equipment" helps save nearly 600 million VND/year for businesses.
The story of Mr. Nguyen Van Bang is typical for the new generation of workers, pioneers in lifelong learning to dare to think, dare to speak, dare to do, dare to take responsibility, dare to sacrifice for the common good, to become useful people for society.
However, in reality, creating conditions for workers to study for life through learning and self-study still faces many difficulties.
Associate Professor, Dr. Le Manh Hung of the Trade Union University raised the issue: It is necessary to further promote the process of intellectualizing Vietnamese workers.
Workers institutionalization should not be simply understood as turning workers into intellectuals, but as a process of transformation that gradually improves workers skills, skills and creativity to meet the requirements of the increasingly high development of the economy and the scientific and technical revolution. Intellectualizing workers is an inevitable trend" - Associate Professor, Dr. Le Manh Hung said.
From another perspective, Deputy Minister of Science and Technology Le Xuan Dinh said: "The calculation is how to provide young workers with understanding and access to new technology, use technology and master technology to improve living standards and income in the context of many businesses laying off workers".
The role of the Trade Union organization with the requirement of lifelong learning
On October 19, 2022, the Prime Minister issued Decision No. 1268/QD-TTg approving the Program "Promoting lifelong learning activities among employees in enterprises by 2030".

The most successful is the program "1 million initiatives - efforts to overcome difficulties, creativity, determination to defeat the COVID-19 pandemic" organized by the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor. Since its launch, the program has reached the 1 million initiative mark - completing the planned target nearly 11 months ahead of schedule. To date, the whole country has had more than 2 million initiatives submitted to participate in the program; many initiatives have high benefits, over 100 billion VND/year; the total value of benefits of the initiatives is estimated at more than 33,000 billion VND.
In September 2024, the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor and the Vietnam Association for Promoting Education organized the signing of a Coordination Program and one of the coordination contents is to encourage the organization of lifelong learning activities. The coordination program on promoting lifelong learning activities, promoting learning, promoting talents, building a learning society among workers in the period of 2024 - 2030 between the two agencies clearly states 5 contents, including: Strengthening information, propagating the Party's guidelines and policies, the State's policies and laws on promoting learning, promoting talents, building a learning and lifelong learning society to raise awareness and unify actions in trade unions at all levels, trade union association promoting learning at all levels, union members, cadres and association members.
In the article Lifetime Learning, General Secretary To Lam emphasized the requirement: Continuing to improve the education system in an open, flexible, and interconnected direction, creating lifelong learning opportunities for all citizens and conducting training according to the needs of the labor market. There are specific solutions to raise social awareness of the role and significance of lifelong learning and the contribution of lifelong learning to improving the quality and competitiveness of national human resources.
To implement this requirement, in response to the new situation, according to Associate Professor, Dr. Hoang Phuc Lam - Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics: The Trade Union organization needs to continue to promote solutions such as: Propaganda, dissemination, raising awareness of lifelong learning, contributing to building a learning society. In which, it emphasized the need to organize the compilation of documents on lifelong learning for employees; training on propaganda skills, mobilizing employees and employers to participate in lifelong learning activities for union officials, especially union officials.
At the same time, implement measures to support employees to study regularly to improve the quality and efficiency of lifelong learning, research, develop and perfect State mechanisms and policies to support employees to study, train, and improve their qualifications and professional skills. Promote research on the application of information technology and digital technology in organizing lifelong learning activities for employees...".
With support from the State and the Trade Union organization, the lifelong learning process also requires self-study by each employee. Thereby contributing to building a learning society, meeting the requirements of the country.
