As browsers that support generative AI are becoming a new trend in the technology industry, Mozilla has just announced a new step to bring Firefox back into competition.
The nonprofit says it will integrate an "AI window" feature, a smart interactive space where users can chat with the AI assistant while surfing the web.
Unlike many current AI browsers, AI window is not enabled by default. Users must proactively choose to participate, can turn off at any time, and all features are being developed according to the open source model.
This is seen as a move to strengthen trust in the context of users increasingly concerned about privacy and the level of control of AI systems.
Mozilla said the feature is being rolled out to users on the waiting list.
Users can still use Firefox in familiar ways such as maintaining Private window mode, classic window mode or turning AI window on for smarter help.
According to the company, this is the most personalized experience it has ever been given, but it still ensures that users are the final decision maker.
The above announcement appeared at the right time when the AI browser race is more vibrant than ever. Many browsers like Dia have replaced the search bar with chatbot, while platforms like Perplexity's Comet and OpenAI's ChatGPT Atlas are designed entirely based on AI agents.
As online search behavior is changing, LLM-based browsers are considered a new bridge between users and the web world.
In that context, Mozilla said it is opting for a different path: building AI to be trustworthy, transparent, and not tying users to a single ecosystem.
In Firefox, you are never forced to use AI. You can decide when, how or whether to use it or not, the company emphasized.
Mozilla also reiterated its commitment to keeping the web free, open, and accessible, in contrast to the trend of keeping users in the dialogue loop of some other AI browsers.
Previously, in June, Firefox added Perplexity AI search options right from the address bar, a sign that Mozilla is gradually approaching AI but in a flexible and user-controlled manner.
