Apple Intelligence, which debuted to the public in October 2024, was met with mixed reviews. While some users loved the AI writing tools, the notification summary feature was not well received.
The main reason is that Apple Intelligence doesn't handle nuanced language well, leading to many news summaries being misleading in terms of content.
To fix this, Apple has decided to disable notification summaries in the news and entertainment categories starting with the third beta of iOS 18.3, iPadOS 18.3, and macOS Sequoia 15.3. Apple is currently working on improving the feature and is expected to restore it in a future update.
Apple also took extra steps to ensure users understand that this is an experimental feature that could cause unintended results.
The company has also changed the way summarized notifications are displayed, using italics to clearly distinguish them from regular notifications.
Users can also customize whether to enable or disable notification summaries right on the lock screen. This setting will be applied individually for each app.
Previously, many press agencies were quick to criticize Apple Intelligence's notification summary feature, arguing that the errors could cause readers to lose trust in media units.
