Teachers apply artificial intelligence to innovate teaching methods

Thanh Hằng |

The development of artificial intelligence (AI) opens up many opportunities for innovation in teaching methods. Many teachers actively get acquainted and use it as an effective support tool, contributing to improving the learning experience of students.

Efforts to master AI - improve teaching efficiency

In the context of AI being increasingly widely applied in teaching and learning activities, many teachers are both excited to accept and proactively find ways to adapt to effectively take advantage of new technology.

For Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Ha - a teacher at Hong Long Primary School (Nghe An), AI brings many useful support tools, helping to save time in preparing lessons and designing lectures more vividly. At the age of nearly 50, Ms. Ha is still persistent in learning to get used to new software.

Many software is constantly updated with features and interfaces, forcing me to constantly learn. But that also helps me practice my adaptability and maintain a lifelong learning spirit. In addition, the school also regularly organizes training courses, creating conditions for teachers to improve their digital technology skills" - Ms. Ha shared.

Sharing about this topic, Ms. Nguyen Thi Mai Huyen - a teacher at Kinh Bac Secondary School (Bac Ninh) - said that when knowing how to exploit it properly, AI not only helps save time, reduce workload but also opens up many new approaches, contributing to improving the quality and learning experience for students.

This is an opportunity for teachers to innovate testing and assessment methods. When I was worried about students using AI to do homework, I often encouraged them to re-explain the test-making process, explain the implementation steps, analyze the reasons for choosing content, thereby practicing critical thinking and speaking ability for students" - Ms. Huyen shared.

When pressure comes with innovation opportunities

Assessing the current level of application of artificial intelligence in teaching in Vietnam, Mr. Nguyen Phong Anh - AI training expert, Project to Improve Artificial Intelligence Capacity for Teachers and Students META - VNU - said that AI brings many benefits in teaching and learning activities at three levels.

At the individual level, students can consider AI as a "pocket teacher" to support translation, concept explanation, and review; teachers can take advantage of AI to prepare lesson plans, design classroom activities or handle administrative work. At the educational environment level, AI helps automate processes, reduce repetition and personalize lectures. At the social level, AI promotes the lifelong learning movement, narrowing regional gaps, if Internet infrastructure and devices are guaranteed.

However, in reality, many teachers are currently facing pressure and challenges when applying AI.

"Firstly, there are limitations in digital capacity, not all teachers are proficient in technology, especially teachers who are familiar with traditional teaching methods.

Second is the difficulty in infrastructure and costs, many teachers still use old computers, weak Internet, the cost of buying AI packages such as Chat GPT is not small compared to income. In addition, some teachers are concerned that their roles will be "overwhelmed" by AI, or that students' AI level will sometimes surpass teachers" - Mr. Phong Anh said.

This person believes that teachers need to maintain their role as leaders, inspirers and orienters instead of just stuffing knowledge into students. To effectively utilize AI, teachers need to approach it systematically, mastering basic knowledge about generative AI. If teachers love their profession, are eager to explore new technology and apply creative methods, they will turn artificial intelligence into a tool to improve teaching quality instead of letting it overshadow themselves. On the students' side, they also need to understand AI as a "double-edged sword", if abused, it will reduce thinking and learning value.
