After launching Gemini Advanced to paid users last year, Google has now started rolling out file sharing and analysis to users for free.
When this feature is available, users will see the notification "Send the file up to receive a quick summary and useful details".
Users can browse through Google Drive or download files directly from the web and mobile applications. Gemini allows you to upload documents to ask questions, improve searches, and receive content summaries. With a table, users can request data analysis or create charts from it.
Google has not yet updated the official guidelines for this feature, so it is unclear how much file capacity can be processed.
With Gemini Advanced, the processing context can be up to 1 million token (a basic unit used to process text in an AI model), equivalent to about 1,500 pages of text or 30,000 source code lines.
The file upgrade feature is being rolled out to the free Gemini account. Note, it only works with the Gemini 2.0 Flash model and does not support the older version, 1.5 Flash.
Previously, Google introduced the ability to upload files to Gemini Advanced users in May 2024, along with the launch of Gemini 1.5 Pro.
