According to data from Appfigures, from the beginning of 2024 to now, the number of available apps on Google Play has decreased sharply from about 3.4 million to only about 1.8 million, equivalent to a decrease of 47%.
Meanwhile, Apple's App Store recorded a slight increase, remaining stable around 1.64 million apps.
Google said it is working to improve the quality of its application store, taking strong measures to eliminate poor quality or at-risk harmful apps.
In addition, Google has also tightened the developer verification process, requiring tighter testing and authentication for new accounts.
Despite a sharp decline in the number of apps, a report from Appfigures shows that the number of newly launched apps on Google Play is still up 7% year-on-year (as of April 2025), showing that the Android ecosystem is still attractive to developers.
Obviously, for Android users, this cleaning could be positive news. The application store will have less trash, finding good applications will be easier and the browsing experience will also become safer and smoother.
